Episodes 160-162 – My Hero Academia FINAL SEASON

Wow, I can’t believe we’re so close to the beginning of the end. After years of incredible highs and occasional lows, we’re in the final season of a shounen series that I think defined the last generation. The comic is finished and we’ll get started right away. Just like the previous episodes, I won’t waste any time. I say this, but the first episode of this season is basically a shot-for-shot rehash of the second half of last season’s final episode, which is still very entertaining and distracting. I knew going into this season that there would be pacing issues, basically starting in the middle of the climax without any clear stop or start. But once I got over that awkwardness, the following episodes were even more powerful, incorporating many of the themes and story beats established throughout the story franchise.

All other League of Villains members have been dealt with; we’re down to the final two bosses, Shigaraki and All for One. Deku is obviously supposed to be the one to take down Shigaraki, and he’s doing his best to restrain him, but these opening episodes are all about All for One, his relationship with All Might, and how the man’s master plan is slowly falling apart. I love the thought process of “All for One” in episode three, where he has an inner monologue and everything always goes according to plan. He is a pragmatic person who always chooses the path that will get him the results he needs, and he is so confident in himself and his abilities that he never feels like he is truly threatened. We know this isn’t true because he’s been stopped before, but it just goes to show the extent of this man’s ego. He’s a mustachioed villain, he knows it, he’s proud of it, and he feels entitled to victory.

But that’s what makes his downfall feel more significant. He doesn’t see other people as real people or obstacles. He considered these to be minor inconveniences that should not distract him from his main goal. He saw pebbles he could have kicked aside, but here he was, scarred and bruised, only a third of his actual age, and wondering why this was happening to him. How could the pebbles trip him up again and again! His disciples wanted nothing to do with him. All Might refused to die, and now the boy threw explosives in his face, and he looked eerily similar to the man who took his brother away from him. This man has accomplished nothing and it’s an honor to watch him perform. We’re arranging this man’s true downfall, and I’m going to eat it with a spoon.

I’m not entirely sure yet about the explanation for Bakugo’s incredible abilities. We all know he’s not going to die, although I’m surprised Edgeshot isn’t, and I can understand being a little frustrated at the idea of ​​everyone still being alive despite being placed in these specific death scenes. I love that the show plays up the classic comic trope of how the mentor dies while passing the baton, but they’re not talking about the classic comic trope of no one dying! my hero academia Interestingly enough, All Might was able to survive and overcome the prophecy seen by his former partners, but he was saved by a character who was stabbed through the heart and miraculously resurrected through his own abilities. You might say this is one of the smartest things ever, or a bit of a cop-out. I don’t mind because it looks great and the topics are all relevant.

I never thought Bakugo would be the final antagonist of All for One, but in many ways, it makes sense since it’s the final step in Bakugo’s character arc. He’s definitely matured and begun to understand that there’s more to being a hero than just winning, but we never get over the guilt he initially felt from when All Might had to save him from All For One. Remember, Bakugo’s kidnapping was arguably the inciting incident that caused All Might to lose his powers. All Might didn’t blame him, but Bakugo still did, so the fact that he was able to save his mentor in the same way while also becoming the biggest bad guy in the entire series is pretty poignant. The next episode will get into the final trenches of All for One’s backstory before we get to the true final act of this battle, and I’m looking forward to seeing that chapter wrap up in the finale.
