Episode 18 – Witch Watch

After some overwhelming performance last week, I’m happy to report that this is a bring Witch watch Back to the usual quality level. It’s still not the funniest episode, but the overall hit average of quality jokes and occasional sincerity is more in line with what I usually expect from this series, which is basically what I really asked for. But, as usual, the normal state of the show quickly gets caught in some wild pranks, and while the prank we get here is fairly simple, that doesn’t stop it from getting some good miles from it.

First on our escape list, we let Nico play a spell that unexpectedly gives the life of paper shikigami, who is attached to her friend Kara. Of the three shorts this week, this is by far the least fun shorts, but it is also the most sincere, so it balances itself. Although Kara initially feared that she had to take care of this Shikigami, she began to warm up gradually and saw that she finally treated the paper doll like her family. This does cause a little tension when Shikigami tries to use herself as a hairpin for Kara, and we learn it is a souvenir to her late mother, but after Shikigami risks her life to screech it up on the river, Kara decides to make it part of her to make the two together so that the two are always together. For its simplicity, this feels very similar to the last brief center surrounding Kara, but it can make up for what is predictable by being equally charming, and it’s nice to see some continuity of her family status.

The second shorts of the week were the most comedic ones, seeing Nico and Kanshi trick Keigo into believing that ordinary marble is a high value item, such as the lack of bubbles or the color radiation in the middle as an indicator of quality. This sounds like a very dull premise, so I was surprised when Keigo talked about marble in one of his videos. Suddenly everyone was scrambling to have some competition and a fierce debate on the most beautiful colors, which would certainly feel very familiar to anyone who has tried and failed to drive the collection market Pokémon Card. Given that Morihito has always been a type of interest in himself, he goes deeper into the rabbit hole than anyone else, which makes it more interesting when Nico and Kansas are eventually forced to have cheats. By then the market was already full of overpriced marble, which killed the craze on its own, but that didn’t stop them and Keigo from having to wear some kits to apologize for videos, which is the best line of attention. While this premise sounds ridiculous, it does feel like it’s about how the internet trends that collector hobbies tend to work, which is an accurate representation, and the show is a perfect example of how Shinohara understands the Internet.

The last small part of the week has caused the gang to dig out something from Morihito’s childhood and trip over the old and awful comics he drew. As Morihito recalls it and wishes he could head to that comic world, Nico tried to achieve this, just to make the spell counterproductive and make everyone look like Morihito’s crummy paintings (minus the misfortune of the Kansas, they look like Morihito’s old wooden art, stepping on Woodblock art like he did, and strolling through the art of Woodfoot, he strolls a horrible horror range. Like the brevity on marble, it’s another feeling that shouldn’t be as fun on paper, and I think it’s too much in comic form, but seeing it in the animation is ultimately a real joy. The cute black and white cut appearance of these characters is very simple when placed next to the usual character designs and backgrounds of the show, and it’s hard to laugh, and the animators are obviously in the wild, letting them walk around while they still feel like Flat paper like. This will be pushed to the limit when the gang tries to get back to normal, seeing them stumble and robbery while they beat the thieves, while comic books hit all the action, which is one of the biggest production highlights we’ve stood out from this show so far. We can even see this brief ending on a rather sweet note, as Morihito reflects how he draws the comics because he had no friends as a kid and thought it would be great to be able to work with others. Of course, when we see them both forget to return Kansas to normal, it certainly makes them walk into the end blast at sunset better. Needless to say, I had a great time in this episode, and even if the comedy setup here is a bit simpler than some of the more refined comedy setups we’ve gotten before, it ends up being a good proof that this show can extend them.
