If I’m not sure I like Mai (and I was), by the end of this week’s episode, I’m pretty sure. Not only because she finally learned about her backstory made her more likable, but also because she was so ridiculous, it was really fun. Honestly, the entire break-in scene is probably the most interesting moment in the entire series so far, and we’ve already had some really interesting moments. In my case, its biggest competitor goes back to episode 2, when the girl violates every known law of physics and hurts the thug with a bowling ball. Let me draw a photo for you:
Mai woke up in the middle of the night during the Sengoku era and thought she heard the unique sound of bowling. She and her peers who are so scared now (especially both are acutely aware of the dangers of the Sengoku era, needing to check what happened, risking the thief. The nanoenzymes grabbed the candle as always so that they could actually see what was going on. Nozomi was frightened and grabbed the nanoenzymes. Leaving Sariri was nothing more than a broom. Meanwhile, Mai and Rina caught the bowling. We had seen bowling as a weapon before this series, so naturally thought it was the target here too. Until the nanoenzymes asked why. It seemed like this was the most obvious and natural thing in the world, Mai said it was because if someone bowled, she wanted to go in. She wasn’t kidding, she was totally serious and everyone around knew. Perfect. I love her. Not changing that.
On one hand, I want to see Mai finally collapse and realize the horror of her and her friends discovering her own situation. But, on the other hand, if she did, we wouldn’t have such moments that were a good and refreshing breakthrough for all tensions. There is no more pure comedy to say it. I think in this sense, I feel conflicted about the outcome of her wish for her fate.
Anyway, the whole communication eventually leads the girl to discover “it”. We are not yet completely sure what “it” is what is hidden room, the fifth sister, a secret bowling alley, or even something else. There are many possible competitors and I’m not sure which one I think is more likely. As we know, as it is, whatever “it” is, other girls find “it”, Suguri draws a sword, and this episode is still in the 90s-style dramatic drama (footnote: why does the anime stop ending such an episode?
Until the last five minutes or so, all of this happened, and most of the plot was spent between Mai and Sumomo. In particular, we finally heard the details of what happened to Maimai’s parents. It has been ridiculed a few times so far – including, including another possible contender for the most fun moments in the series (indiscriminately, “Wait, no, that’s the bowling of your dead parents.” Still, it’s a very standard thing, anime parents die: on the way to the bowling alley, died in a traffic accident. It’s all the same, but if you’ve seen your share of anime, you haven’t seen it before.
This episode is weird because it feels very little at the same time, but a lot of things happen. On the one hand, we get the details of Mai’s parents, and we get another moment of Sumomo, saying she’s looking for an activity to enjoy on her own, and then, of course, the girl finds “it”. Obviously, that’s a lot, but they’re all enjoyable in the episode itself, which is fun. It sets a big stage for next week’s stage. And, given the cruelty of the series, it’s really exciting to have no idea how unexpected the entire premise is at the outset, it really can be.
