Episode 4 – With You, Our Love Will Make it Through

I think you could almost call this show a “rapidly escalating show.” After last week’s respite in which we didn’t really have anything spicy happening, this episode plunges us straight into the overwhelming sexual tension between the main cast. There are emotional confessions, physical boundaries being crossed and a tragic love triangle blossoming. Aida’s feelings for Marie were touched on in the final episode, which felt a little strange considering how he acted at the beginning of the show. I think it’s an attempt to show that he’s not completely in love with her yet, but he always finds himself a little attracted to her. The question is whether the episode’s climax will push him to pursue her more aggressively, or whether he’ll continue to do what he’s always done before: act as a wingman and help the two get together. I feel bad for this guy and I hope he gets some form of happy ending.

I have to admit, part of me really wondered if Mari and Tsuna were going to have sex in the classroom at noon. The way things are framed makes it feel like this is what they’re about to do, or what they were doing before the two stopped. There are a lot of things about this episode that feel really weird and clunky from an animation standpoint. I mentioned last week that the undulating animation style can feel very distracting. We don’t get that much, but there’s a lot of action and scene changes that feel very choppy. I think the basketball scenes and the intimate scenes in the classroom are the best examples. I hope this doesn’t indicate that the show’s production has collapsed after just four episodes.

Regarding the emotional development between our two protagonists, I do think it’s interesting that the show seems to be building to this almost self-aware tragic romance. Seeing these two interact as friends made me even more enthusiastic about their romance than the first episode, where these two seemed to be physically attracted to each other in a raw sense. Now, I do believe it when they say they can no longer hold back their feelings, even though they know it’s hard for them to have romantic love. If their relationship became public, Tsuna would have to tread even more carefully than he is now, and you knew Mari would be a target. It makes me wonder if there are rules and specific limits to orc-human relationships. Tsuna is already a byproduct of the relationship between beast and human, but he also has a lot of specific restrictions, like he can’t hang out with people outside of school or the library, which is very sad.

This feels like the point where the story really begins, because while the tension is building in the background, now we have a real main focus around which everything can revolve. The pervasive racism and orc suffering is interesting, but since Tsuna is such a well-acted character, it’s hard to feel like the show is legitimately building to anything, and the romance is mostly focused on the passionate side of things. Now that both have admitted their love for each other, they face an inner battle. Now, their physical passion for each other will conflict with the fundamentals of their sense of self. I knew sooner or later they were going to mess up and be found out. The question is what consequences will they have to deal with and how will they deal with it?
