Korean entertainment media Orson reported on Friday Whale Star: Jilongyue Mermaidthe Webtoon series that won the 2021 Korean Content Award Presidential Award has officially launched production. Actor Woo-Shik Choi, who is in the Oscar-winning film Parasitecurrently talking about taking on the leading role.

According to multiple industry sources on Friday Whale Star Its production lineup has been completed and is currently in the final stages of casting and pre-production.

The original Webtoon story reads:

This year was a recap of 1926 Hans Christian Andersen“Little Mermaid” and Josen (now South Korea) belong to Japanese colonial rule. Su-A Heo is a woman who spends a lot of time working and swimming in the sea. Her job was her life until one day when she found a wounded independent fighter named Uihyeon Kang was washed on the shore. She brought him back to health and only lost her ability to speak in a murder case by comrade Uihyeon Haesu Song. When she heads to the capital Gyeongseong (now Seoul), she finds herself intertwined with a strange, brave new world and the people in it.

Choi was given the role of Uiheyon Kang and was reportedly actively reviewing scripts.

The official broadcast date has not been announced.
