Episode 10 – Anne Shirley

I’ve been scared of this episode since the adaptation. I think most of us may remember the first time we died—my first happened when I was five: My great aunt Sayde passed away, and in an old barn I found a beautiful box with a braid with a hair and a black card that read “Mary Anne, 1906.” My mother explained that this might be a memorial to Memento Mori, a souvenir to the dead. Then, when I was eight, I read Green Gable Annie Matthew died, my first death. Since then, these three moments have been living in my soul.

Part of what made this death a big impact was the speed of occurrence. It was a normal morning and then suddenly it wasn’t. Matthew read the paper and then…crashed. He left. There is no big fanfare at the moment, no real warning. One chapter in this book is titled “The Reaper of Death Name” and the Reaper strikes like a snake. Anne and Marila don’t have time to deal with anything. When Rachel Lynde came, she knew that Anne wouldn’t help sending the doctor. Mourning is what takes up space, from Marilla’s feeling that she has to sell the green gables to Anne telling Diana that she wants to be alone, to the minister’s wife, Mrs. Allan, to gently guide Anne on the sad process. Watching is not easy, but it is done well.

Matthew’s death is not more scenes in the original novel. The whole chapter is six pages in my copy, which mentions many things we see in episode 10 – Matthew is lying in the coffin in the living room (which is typical at the time), Anne crying, Marila tries to comfort her, Anne plantes roses. The cemetery parade is more or less a supplement. Although taking his body out of the house is, there is no mention of hearse (historically accurate). But I am grateful for a glance at Gilbert, mourning the green gables, and then listening to Josie telling the other two boys that Anne won’t go to college. If the version of this story is always done well, it shows how Gilbert feels and his quiet desire for Anne. He always pays attention to her and is always there to support her even if she can’t see her. (Or don’t want to see it.) Nothing shows his kindness and dedication as much as Anne’s Avilian school. It was a moment when she realized that even without forgiveness, he was caring – which allowed her to admit that she did the same.

Over the years, many readers complained that Anne shouldn’t give up her scholarship to stay with Marilla on the Green Gables. I can understand this. This was a major opportunity for her. But the decision to stay and teach makes more sense. Anne had no one before Marilla and Matthew, and now Matthew is gone, Marilla’s vision fails, and she feels that she owes her adoptive mother and maybe she can stay. This is not a decision that Anne or LM Montgomery makes easily, although perhaps it is a decision you need to fully appreciate. Of course I didn’t until my mother had a catastrophic accident five years ago. I had to completely transform my life to help my parents, but it was my only option Can Do it. I don’t regret it. If Anne gave up on Marila (which is what it feels like), she would never be able to live with herself, and that’s what’s most important here.

This episode brings us to the end of the first novel, which means, as some of us fear Anne leaves Avonlea and Annie on the island There are significantly fewer episodes of attack. I’m a little worried about this, but at the same time, I’m grateful for how this episode went. Anne Reading Marilla Robert Browning’s “Pippa’s Song,” by Marilla Robert Browning, which you may remember hearing earlier this season, is a great way to transition to the last line of novels and episodes: “God is in His Heaven, and the world is all going well.”

Even if it feels incorrect, it can sometimes help to whisper or similar emotions and hopefully it will become real.
