Episode 24 – Anne Shirley

The couplet is William Cullen Bryant’s 1821 poem The Rivulet, just like Anne’s verse loudly, it also illustrates her mental state and view of the world. She rejects Royal Gardner’s marriage hand, Diana goes further and enters the realm of her mother, Gilbert gets sick and dying, and even her beloved Queen of Snow falls into a storm. Romance is separated from her world in various definitions. Things change too quickly and are too rapid to handle.

This is where she has been heading since she first rejected Gilbert’s proposal two years ago. Between this and Ruby’s death, Anne’s childhood world collapses. Although Matthew’s death and Diana’s marriage are also signs of change, their expectations are higher, or more natural. Those people have no sense of horrible deaths of friends or betrayal of friends, saying you are not ready to hear them. If she was told gently about Gilbert’s illness, then Anne might not be forced to get along with herself. Anne reaches the point where she needs to really think about her emotions without being distracted from school or other activities. She is in a while and she is ready to think about the next step forward. Has the world really lost its romantic coloring? Or was Anne beaten by it herself?

Gilbert’s second successful proposal has many literary precedents. As Bryant later said in “The Stream,” “But you haven’t changed every year, /Gayly Shalt plays and flashes here…” He may be talking about streams, but I think his words apply to books, too.

There are more novels in the series, and I highly recommend reading them to complete Anne’s journey. From then on, she was happy more than just the closed scene of this adventure.
