Good Lord. I think this is ultimately a good thing festival The review was delayed by a week because I don’t know what I would do if I had to wander around in “empty stare” for an entire week without a palette cleanser. Last week, Ludo’s horrific outburst sent Amo into a bloody mess, with Amo telling the other cleaners that “Mom gave Amo her first love,” which was a red flag if I heard one. Unfortunately, all the worst possible implications turned out to be true, and Amo’s backstory was just as ugly and sad as we feared.

The decision to depict Amo’s childhood through the girl’s own distorted subjective lens is both clever and cruel. On the one hand, the use of childish crayon strokes acts as a filter, preventing the show from depicting the graphic details of Amo being sold to human traffickers and raped. While there aren’t any exploitative or harmful visuals, this shift in style also highlights just how horrific and disgusting this “Mr.” guy’s actions are. No matter how long she was trapped in this tower, Amo was still a child, one who had been emotionally stunted and neglected her entire life, and whose only understanding of “love” came from her upbringing by her kidnapper and rapist, who himself apparently suffered from a personality disorder and delusions.

Needless to say, it’s not a sad day when the “angel” arrives and sets off a chain of events that leads to Amo taking Mister’s boots for himself and letting the bastard plummet to his death. It’s hard to feel OK about it. Amo is still heartbroken from a lifetime of pain that she will still have to live with for the rest of her life. Perhaps the only solace we can take as an audience is in the moments of reconciliation and connection that Ludo shares, knowing that they are both victims of the same cycle of abuse and neglect. Him reaching out to her doesn’t take away the pain he’s caused her, but it helps them both find some form of healing. At least, as long as Amo survives his encounter with Jabber at the end of the episode…

“The Empty Gaze” is another incredible display festival It’s okay, but it’s also a bit unbearable. Thankfully, I was able to skip right to the next chapter of the story… Okay, so “The Storm Before the Storm” isn’t a title that promises a complete story. Lack Friction, but we also get a respite from the truly grueling despair of the last few episodes, so we have to take what we can get.

In fact, The Storm Before the Storm is pretty funny. We get a fun world-building with regular storms of trash falling from the sphere that everyone on the surface has to endure, and the crew gets into some silly shenanigans with the crazy Dr. Alice, whom they visit for a patch-up after the Amor incident. Most importantly, it’s confirmed that Semiu can indeed shout when needed, such as in the case of a gang of looters trying to storm the Janitors’ headquarters. Elsewhere, after hanging out at a local diner, the gang encounters a new group of eccentric janitors and is drawn into another battle with Jabber and the Raiders from the manhole entrance.

So if you are worried festival Will start to give into your darkest and nihilistic impulses too strongly, don’t worry. It’s still the same weird and energetic trash extravaganza we fell in love with a few months ago. The only difference now is that we know just how much depth and emotional power lies beneath that greasy, sticky muck.
