Episode 9 – Hell Teacher: Jigoku Sensei Nube

Starting with the rather bland installment payments last week, I was surprised to experience the Onion Ninja attack until the exciting story of this week ended. Teacher Hell: Jigoku Sensei Nube Expert in telling stories that are efficient in narratives, with more depth than expected in the plotly supernatural comedy that people ostensibly target children.

Our Yokai this time is Zashiki-Warashi, a cute little spirit that is invisible to most people who live in unconscious houses and wish them good luck. All over the world, there are folklore about the same kind spirit of houses. The British “Brownies” surfaced: They came out at night to perform family or agricultural tasks while everyone was asleep, asking for simple food and drinks in return. If offended or ignored, they will leave, and sometimes it may be naughty.

Nube herself meets a Zashiki-Warashi on the street, smiling shyly with misfortune (his own fault after trying to use his demonic powers to shop, which is not a shiny example of the kids he teaches), and the tiny Wee Thing Thing Thing Thing Mavils Inle Mearning Nube can see her. Zashiki-Warashi was attracted by his kindness to her, followed him to school and continued to try to make everyone happy with her magic. This soon starts to anger Nuber as all the kids suddenly start scoring perfectly in their tests, achieving impossible athletic feats, winning random matches, etc. Nube was initially happy when Ms. Ristuko even asked him on a date, but realized that only Zashiki-Warashi’s influence could he be happy for her influence, and that their needs made them happy, which made them happy. He clumsyly tried to keep Zashiki-Warashi going to her next residence, heartbroken the poor mite.

Zashiki-Warashi locks in Makoto, though he is a fifth-grade student like all his friends, looking the youngest and most childish yet. Makoto is a person who imagines how to help Zashiki-Warashi (so she keeps going) – finding out what will make her happy. At this point, the aforementioned Onion Ninja begins their ruthless attack. Zashiki-Warashi is more than just Yokai – she is the spirit of a generous, caring little girl who died of hunger/ill during wartime, and her 100-year-old mother still grieves for her. Although Zashiki-Warashi doesn’t remember who she really is, her passionate desire for everyone she loves in life to live a happy life, leads to her spirit being closely related to the world, wandering from home to home, providing anonymous act of service.

Makoto and Nube addressing Zashiki-Warashi’s presence is only partially successful – using Nube’s spiritual power to reunite mothers and children does make the painful adorable spiritual girl happy, but it can’t help changing her fate. After all, helping people really make Zashiki-Warashi happy.

This is a rare event without conflict. Without a battle with evil monsters, Nuber is not using his own power in battle, but a purely benign means. Not every Yokai is evil, but they are not human and cannot expect human values from it. Despite her cute appearance, Zashiki-Warashi doesn’t fully understand the consequences of her behavior, perhaps because she was a young child after her death. As viewers, we really feel for her self-created, almost pure existence, that moments of her emotional catharsis are powerful, even in brief words. I love how this show can tell such melancholy, meaningful stories between its action and danger-oriented plot. I wonder what’s next for Nube and his class?
