Episode 7 – There’s No Freaking Way I’ll Be Your Lover! Unless…

There are a lot of things to unpack here, and it can be said that many are not good. But, I was torn apart because a lot of them were also fun. We finally had a fateful confrontation between Mai and Satsuki, and it was as toxic as I expected. The two encounter an interesting breakdown, they are completely missing each other’s point of view, and Renako is trapped in it. Honestly, I really feel bad about her because there is a certain point in the conversation that the two people didn’t consider Renako as a person. They simply see her as a tool to verify herself or use against others. Despite their claims that they care about her and want to be her good partner, they didn’t listen to her at all, didn’t really respect her autonomy, just ignored her completely until she finally stood up for herself to redirect the game. Given that her main problem was dealing with her cruel anxiety and passivity, it could be said that this put her in the situation in the first place, which is arguably a good character moment for Renako. The second half of this episode feels very uncomfortable in a real and fun way.

It’s fun because we reach ridiculous character logic here. Many of them come from Satsuki, who have been flipping back and forth between seeing Renako as a tool, while also showing that she is still willing to make her work a good companion. She may still be trying to rationalize their relationship as a business deal, but she is willing to put the money in her mouth and take full responsibility for the situation. In some ways, she is not much better than Mai, because she can be said to prioritize her feelings. But she at least realized that she had gone too far and apologized. I will take Satsuki to Mai’s hell. I don’t think you need to break down that much psychologically to make Satsuki so angry at Mai in the first place.

Mai, where do I start? I give you the benefit of doubt when you have the fact that you have a physical intimacy with Renako. I think the show is a bit concealed on it, but at least it has been resolved. To my surprise, we have not addressed the treatment of Satsuki. Mai makes it seem like a very small quarrel that can be easily resolved through conversations, and ironically how big is Mai doing Satsuki without actually talking to her. I thought Satsuki was just angry because Mai was behaving like a big baby and had a poor party at Satsuki’s location after the whole argument with Renako. Satsuki even made it clear that this wasn’t the first time something similar happened. Satsuki basically needs to be the one who keeps installing Mai, and I feel like Mai is just accepting that it is a natural part of their friendship. I’m not saying that friends are wrong with each other when they need it, but it’s obvious that the degree of interaction they interact is very uneven. I don’t blame Satsuki for being stubborn, because she wasn’t enough to meet through simple conversations.

But there are more! It wasn’t even realised that Mai could say treated Satsuki like trash during the last interaction. Mai asked Satsuki to embrace her entire situation was one step more than the rest of the time. There may be a problem with the translation I’ve seen Youtubebecause I saw the “hug”, just assumed to hug or hold. However, Mey may ask Satuki to sleep with her or be intimate with her as a form of punishment, and the only reason she thinks is because she is totally convinced that Satuki has feelings for her. Whether this is an explanation or not, it doesn’t matter whether Mey’s feelings about Satuki are correct. It is a mess to ask someone in this case, and Mai dares to take moral highs in this conversation, just as she helps everyone. I don’t know how the characters recover from such actions, or how we can solve this situation.

I’m curious about what the show intends to do in three of the competitions, but a portion of me think they’ll be able to redeem Mai because it’s not like feeling like they’re learning as much as they can. Even though Renako took her to do it, she still couldn’t grasp the situation. On any other show, I felt like Mai would be a villain, but the show didn’t seem to insult her so much, which made me wonder what the whole direction would be.

This hasn’t even gotten into what Ajisai has done yet, which is interesting to say that the three people ended up having this conversation first. Renako, I know you’re not that smart and a lot is going on, but you definitely have to recognize that you admit it to Ajisai at least once. Ajisai admits she is trying to stand out from the shell so that she can be a good companion for Renako. Interestingly, the two seemingly normal conversations and things that are completely different from each other. At some point, I felt bad about Ajisai because she didn’t know what was going on. Still, Ajisai may also be Renako’s best companion, both as a friend and a girlfriend. I doubt the show will go in this direction, but I wonder if this misunderstanding will continue.
