Episode 7 – The Fated Magical Princess: Who Made Me a Princess

This week, Athanasia learns a very important lesson: don’t laugh at the powerful four-hundred-year-old wizard. Or maybe a lesson yes Laughing at them because when he wasn’t sending Elsie on her little revengeful trip to meet Ezekiel, Lucas seemed excited that she wasn’t afraid of him. We still don’t know much about him other than his profession and rough age, but he seemed to have spent a lot of time in his tower before coming to Obelia, only for Rapunzel to mold him into a combination of a princess and a witch. Some of his teasing or harsher reactions make it feel less like Lucas is a jerk and more like he’s completely forgotten how to interact with people, let alone children. He does care about Elsie, as we see during her second encounter with predatory pond weeds. It’s not that he can’t figure it out she It made him unable to completely control his reaction to her.

This is a common theme when it comes to men and boys interacting with princesses. Duke Alpheus is confused by the way she turned against him and thwarted his plans, Ezekiel isn’t sure how she got into his garden and why she hid her identity (or was so nice to him), and Claude…well, Claude has the emotional intelligence of a garden snail, so he’s confused and doesn’t care at all. But the common thread is that none of them are entirely sure what happened to Princess Athanasia or what to do with her. While it makes more sense in the source material, the implication here is still that she didn’t behave in a way that anyone expected, and that’s what caused them to be disappointed. Generally speaking, princesses are probably supposed to be a lot more docile than Elsie.

But the main event this week is that we meet Ezekiel. Elsie’s dreams for the future lead her to believe he would be in her father’s pocket, but the boy she actually meets is not Alpheus 2.0. Ezekiel looks quiet and anxious, like he is forced to act much older than he is, which we can see in all of his thoughts and actions. He looks more like a small adult than an eight or nine year old boy. When he sees Elsie’s jewel-like eyes, he knows who she is, but he respectfully hides this knowledge in a way that belies his age. His main concern about being sent to another country to study is not that he doesn’t want to leave home, but that he worries about Janet, which again illustrates his over-maturity. Alpheus doesn’t seem to be doing anything to help his son become “perfect,” and while Elsie can’t put it into words, she obviously notices this.

But more interestingly, she may well have created a better future for him. In her dream, Ezekiel was his father’s puppet, carrying out his orders without question. But that was before our Elsie rejects him as her study partner. Since she did this, he has been sent to school, which at first seems like a bad thing. But if you think about it carefully, studying in a foreign country means that he will be freed from his father’s control. Once out of the Duke’s sphere of influence, Ezekiel will have the chance to grow into his own man, one willing to go against the wishes of dear old father. By rejecting him as a companion, Ash allowed him to change his own future with his own hands.

This opens the door to more questions than answers. Will Janet’s fate also change due to this change? How will Lucas’s existence and Elsie’s mastery of water magic affect the future? Will Claude stop holding his daughter like a naughty kitten? Actually meeting Janet next week should give us some ideas.
