Episodes 1-3 – Pass the Monster Meat, Milady!

I know it’s tempting to think this way, but Pass the monster meat, Milady! not so much Delicious food in the dungeon We have as many as possible at home Delicious food in the dungeon And anime villains of your choice, blended together in a food processor and poured generously into misfit romantic relationships. I must say, it’s absolutely delicious. In fact, it’s so delicious that I’m going to call it a “MM”—not in the sense of “monster meat” or “meat, ma’am!”, but because of the sound it makes when eaten in its own right.

If it’s not obvious, I just think this show has been enjoyable so far. It’s not about reinventing food anime, villain anime, and especially romance anime. But it doesn’t have to be this way. It’s cute, it’s easy, and it makes me crave something a little better than pizza rolls that inevitably burn my mouth because I leave them in the microwave for exactly 3 seconds too long.

That being said, my favorite thing about this anime so far is without a doubt the adorable dynamic between monster meat lover Melphila and adventurous eater Aristide. They are the quintessential socially rejected duo who inevitably find each other after being rejected by their other upper-class peers. Well, there’s also a common interest: the titular monster meat. More specifically, Melphiera – known as the greedy villain – has become famous for daring to eat monsters, something Aristide has absolutely no tolerance for. He was actually very interested in it himself, and Melphila was more than happy to spread the gospel. Thus, due to their unconventional tastes, Aristide soon made it known that he intended to propose to Melphila.

There’s no “will they or won’t they”, which might kill some people’s motivation, but I think MM can make it work. Melphila and Aristide are adorable with each other, and it’s equally fun to watch Aristide want to join Melphila in her niche hobby of preparing, cooking, and eating monster meat. They already seem obsessed with each other (especially Aristide), and I’m willing to bet that this unique bonding time will only bring them closer as the series progresses.

Of course, not everything about this anime is perfect. Animation is serviceable but mediocre. Although I would try to avoid not comparing it with Delicious food in the dungeon There are so many that one can’t help but feel that MM is doing a lot of things. Delicious food in the dungeon Do better. But most notably, some of the information leaked at the end of episode three really surprised me. More specifically, the details are unclear, but at least for now, there are indications that many people around Melfila don’t eat monster meat, not because they think it’s disgusting and disgusting, but because of religious customs. If so, it would certainly put a different spin on Melphira’s desire to show everyone around her the joys of cooking monster meat. The ending of the latest episode will almost certainly be fully explained next week, so I won’t pass judgment here until we have all the details, but for now I will say I hope I’m wrong.

Frankly, I don’t think MM needs Melfila to have a reason rooted in a tragic backstory for why she likes monster meat. In fact, I don’t think she needs a reason, period. Delicious food in the dungeon It’s nothing if not proof that you can create a perfect story with people who just love it because they think it’s cool. It doesn’t have to be deep, and not everything needs to be locked behind dark flashbacks that will be unlocked once our social connection reaches level eight.

Still, even if it’s not without its issues, and it’s far from the strongest premiere I’ve seen this season, overall it’s still an enjoyable premiere. If you stick to it, I’d say it passes the three-episode test. If nothing else, at the end of the day, what matters most is whether a show makes you want to watch the next episode, and it certainly left me hungry for more.
