Episode 9 – The Fated Magical Princess: Who Made Me a Princess

My God, time didn’t just pass by like that. It seems like just one episode ago, Athanasia was about seven years old, and now, in a week, she’s going to be fourteen. That’s the beauty of time skipping – skipping those pesky growing pains and getting straight to the good stuff. Of course, in the case of this show, that means skipping over the years when Ezekiel was abroad so that the romantic subplot can begin to develop.

Not that Elsie was that romantically interested in boys. Lucas is a total nuisance right now, although his apology this week does let us know that he’s trying to be a better person, or at least someone who knows how to interact with others and not be as selfish as he was before. He first showed up in Obelia (or at least the palace) because he didn’t understand what Elsie was doing or how she was happily weaving the threads of fate, and now he seems to be there because he enjoys it. Yes, he still bothers Elsie obnoxiously, but he seems really invested in her now. Interestingly, when he looked at the photos of his future dance partners, the jealousy he’d felt towards Ezekiel over the past few weeks didn’t seem to be there – his ego had led him to see them as a threat, since Athi didn’t even know them, and she had some crush on Ezekiel. One wonders if Duke Alpheus’s tune will change when his son returns? Previews for next week seem to indicate it will. This could mean that Lucas is simply biding his time while the other young man (can I call him Lucas?) isn’t around…or that he’s blind to his own emotions, which, frankly, seems like a real possibility.

However, Elsie is leaning towards dancing with her dad at the prom, which is probably for the best. Claude has done a lot to calm himself down since becoming a father, but this may make him an even greater threat to potential partners – Felix seems to think his life is worthless if he dances with the princess. But what’s even more interesting is that even though Claude loves his daughter, he still can’t see her birthday as a positive day. Diana did die in childbirth (or at least died from it), so Assi’s birthday is the anniversary of Diana’s death. Although he may have had Elsie longer than Diana at this point, his pain kept her in his mind and heart. He fears that if he lets go, he will truly lose Diana.

That’s why Athy’s gift to him is so important. Although the gift she gave her father was important in itself; What Now is more important. Not only does she trust him not to destroy it like every other portrait of Diana that has ever existed before, but she shows him Diana’s life through herself and Claude. She’s not completely lost yet, and she never will be. Diana was a part of them, as far as her daughter was concerned, indeed, and Claude didn’t need to worry about losing her. When we see him standing in front of this painting, it symbolizes him reaching a turning point that he has been heading towards ever since he confessed to Elsie that he will always love her.

The story may be gearing up to move on to where Elsie’s romantic prospects are more important, but that’s not, and shouldn’t be, the focus of the story. This is a family thing, and Claude is starting to understand that.
