Episode 6 – Campfire Cooking in Another World with My Absurd Skill Season 2

Heck, this would definitely be a filler episode if I hadn’t seen it. I think this is necessary to some extent – when your cooking animation lacks excitement and grilling is high, plots without anything important happening are inevitable. Especially when it happens in the middle, one person once said, this is the perfect place for your story to have a flaw or two. Still, I couldn’t help but feel a little bored by episode six; I didn’t expect the most concentrated storyline to come after the fun dungeon crawling of the last few episodes, but I also didn’t expect things to be so aimless.

Just like that, our friends have left the dungeon and begun their next big adventure. Elland excitedly ran back into the fight to check out the goodies from his dungeon trek, but he exited as quickly as he entered. This begs the question, why was he thrust into this episode in the first place? It doesn’t matter, though, because Mukoda and his companions encounter some children running for their lives from the orcs. Apparently, their father crawled in a dungeon and never came back, and their dear mother became seriously ill. The children were all good at it, and they rushed into the forest to gather medicinal materials.

You Know What to Do: Phil and Dora defeat the orcs with ease, and after some expository dialogue, the group prepares some delicious food. We got two almost back-to-back cooking montages, and as usual, the food looked good. The first montage is of the squad cooking burgers, which I will no doubt devour like the greedy, gluttonous demon that I am. I also have to hand it to Mukoda for building a giant burger tower – not only is it a burger tower that shoots through the sky, I’m more than willing to bet it could rival Boston’s Eagle’s Deli.

The second montage shows Sui creating the elixir of life from the flesh and blood of Earth Dragon, while Mukoda prepares a hearty soup that looks good on its own, but still not quite as good as the burger. But alas, I’m comparing apples to oranges, or in this case soup to burgers. The point is, these elixirs and soups were prepared for two children to cure their seriously ill mother. The children got the soup and the elixir and rescued their mother from the edge of the cliff, and that was the end of it. It’s like the episode clapped to itself and said, “Instant drama! Just have some kids with dead dads and sick moms!” Maybe the kids will play a role later in the story, but for now, they just seem like necessary plot points to give this episode some substance. Oh well, I have to at least give Yon points for calling Phil a “big dog.” It’s a mild affront to Phil’s mythic nature, but where’s the lie? Phil is actually a big dog boy who is always begging for food. He’s not a beast destined to bring about Ragnarok, but more like my neighbor’s Scottish terrier, although Phil hasn’t left any brown surprises on anyone’s front lawn…yet.

The meandering plot means nothing is ever really accomplished. It also means you already know what you’re going to get. In addition to what I just explained, our useless goddess returns to intervene in the final moments of the show. Because, of course, they will. They appear just to check that last necessary box. Unlike what is cooked here, this sixth episode campfire cooking It’s a big burger. But they can’t all be hits, and I’m still hungry for what the Hungry Dogs anime has to offer in its second half.
