Episode 5 – The Rising of the Shield Hero Season 4

I wish I had more investment in the climax of this arc. A lot of the work is there, and you can say the show is trying to find an emotionally uplifting story about the Tiger Brothers and Sisters. Not only were they able to stop a conspiracy, which would put Naofumi in danger, but they also coincidentally met the man who killed his father. They won the respect of other beastmen and were able to even revisit their childhood homes. Plus, Fohl gets a motivation, some new hair and the respect of his sister, who, despite getting better, insists on belittling him, despite the boy sacrificing everything to make sure she lives.

Like many other writing issues that plague the entire franchise, I only got the highlights of the main story and missed a lot of key details and accumulations that would make these moments satisfying. I know that adapting light novels to TV series will require a lot of workarounds, but the series trims a lot of meat with fat. Not only that, it doesn’t organically build any emotional climax or solution with the Tiger siblings. They appear out of convenience, not because their presence adds importance to the journey. This made Atla’s outbreak during the Council meeting feel very out of place, as if the two men ended up hijacking the story.

If I get the proper emotional reward from their center stage, it can still be satisfied, but I don’t feel it. The attention these two have attracted is very frustrated. You think the climax will be about Atla, but in the battle it turns to Fohl, who suddenly gives all this importance and grandeur, though nothing really has been done since his introduction. He is probably one of the most uninspired electricity I’ve seen in fantasy stories, where he turns into a normal white tiger capable of moving quickly. Also, I’m not sure how Naofumi triggers the conversion to work, or I even like it as a plot point. It felt like a mandatory way to blend Fohl’s development with Naofumi until the transformation ended, was this the main reason why the Council could suddenly hand over Naofumi’s damn ship?

The potential is here, and I do like the last third of this episode to visit the Tiger Brothers’ primitive home. The details they suddenly return to have are all very vague to an incredible level. Nevertheless, there is still a certain degree of satisfaction to see these two siblings bringing some kind of happy ending. Unlike many arcs throughout the show, for the first time in a while, I felt that the emotional reaction was not anger or pure confusion. But that’s because I hope it gets better handled. Maybe it shows that the series has actually started to get better, or I’m eager to get me willing to grab anything.
