Episode 42 – Spy×Family Season 3

Although we know that Yul was orphaned early on and turned to assassination to support Yuri, we don’t have much information about her background. This is mostly for comedy, or just as another layer of deception, plus her need to hide her job from her husband and brother, etc. Others Currently hidden. She’s often shown to be as deep as a puddle, which has always been one of the few issues I have with the series as a whole.
That’s why this episode is important. Yul’s shopping trip, while not as serious as her adventures on the cruise ship, is arguably the most in-depth we’ve seen of her character to date. This is because, the entire time she is out and about in public, she is troubled by the fact that she may not look “normal.”
What is “normal” and how do we learn to be that way? To be honest, I don’t really know, but in the completely un-German pseudo-1960s, “normal” was closely tied to social norms, and Yor was very aware that she didn’t necessarily follow social norms. Her marriage to Lloyd happened because being single (or a widower with children) was seen as a dangerous anomaly, especially for Joel. Due to widespread fear of the secret police operating under the veneer of upper class society, the Fogg family must remain as normal as possible – and that’s not counting Loyd’s mission, of which Yul is of course unaware. Her stress does increase with each new outing, as we see when she panicked and asked her neighbor where to buy Anya candy.
But it’s her perversity that attracts Melinda Desmond. From the moment Yul rescued her (and her shopping) from the stairs in the department store, Melinda was hooked. It’s like she’s discovered a strange creature she wants to train, and it seems only part of the reason she invited Yul to her girls’ club is that Yul doesn’t recognize her as Donovan Desmond’s wife. If I were being cynical, I would say that Melinda saw someone in you that she could probably use – not only was she very athletic, but she was also innocent in a very childish way. This combination is likely to become a “potential chess piece” in Melinda’s mind.
I have no doubt that Melinda would use Joel if she thought she could. The sudden transformation from bubbly mom friend to cold politician wife is so convincing that you can almost see things changing when she thinks Yul is Anya’s mother. She may be a hands-off parent, but that doesn’t mean she neglects her son, and she’s well aware of Damian and Anya’s relationship. (This is just another boys over flowers Reference waiting to happen – she really looks like Domyoji Tsukasa’s mother on that show, and Damian is the closest he’s ever been to Domyoji this week. ) You do seem to recognize this danger to some extent, which makes sense; she would be a very formidable assassin if she couldn’t detect malicious intent. But she was more worried about appearing “normal” in Luyd’s eyes. She may not always wear it on her sleeve, but Yor is clearly a very anxious person.
Everything is lining up for Operation Strix on Desmond’s front, and Luyd now has two family members. But as the title of next week’s episode suggests, there’s more going on than just WISE’s plans. What happened to the bus hijacking incident…?
