Episode 9 – The Fragrant Flower Blooms With Dignity

While the Hall of Shame for Anime Parents is lengthy and storied, the Hall of Fame is much less common. To a large extent, we can attribute this difference to a variant of the “orphan fantasy” in children’s literature, in which it is more difficult to send children on potentially dangerous adventures if competent and caring parents are present. but Fragrant flowers bloom with dignity Not that story. For plot reasons, it doesn’t need to leave Rintaro and Kaoruko alone, and it certainly doesn’t send them on a dangerous adventure to another world. In fact, given Rintaro’s self-esteem issues, it’s important that he have Supportive of his parents, I’m happy to say his mom is more than up to the task. While I don’t say it lightly, she’s easily comparable to Satoru’s mother. Deleted.

The plot makes no secret of the fact that Rintaro was chosen for his “scary” appearance, and few, if any, children make the effort to understand him as a person. At some points, he just sullenly accepts that this is his life, and the show is largely content with letting us assume that his pierced ears and bleached hair are the stereotypes he leans into. But this week, we learned the truth: It’s not that he tends to think he’s terrible; Rintaro tries to become stronger by looking like the people he admires. That man was a foreign pastry chef who helped spark Rintaro’s own interest in baking because he looked so happy Make cakes in his bakery. He looked “scary” because he looked “foreign,” but that didn’t depress him. Young Rintaro may not be able to express this clearly (and older Rintaro still has some trouble), but it represents to him a man who doesn’t care what others think of him and is still happy. It was a wish that Rintaro couldn’t quite express, but it was clear nonetheless.

But more importantly, his mother understood him. She’s always been like this – ever since he came home crying about how the other kids treated him, she’s been doing her best to make Rintaro feel safe, secure, and happy. In fact, her hair was also bleached in solidarity with her son, and she had her ears pierced for the same reason. She wants him not to feel alone, and she goes out of her way to show him that. She still does it – sure, having your mom insist on inviting friends over for you can be a bit of a teenage nightmare, but bringing Kaoruko and Subaru upstairs when Rintaro has already invited his school buddies over is just another way for her to show how proud she is of him. He went from having no friends to five, and you better believe she knew he and Kaoruko had a crush on each other too. Raising her daughters wasn’t about her micromanaging his social life, but rather her basking in her son’s happiness—and her tears showed she wasn’t sure it would ever come.

Everyone else was very accommodating which helped. (Well, maybe not Saku.) Now that they’ve gotten to know Subaru and Kaoruko, they’re more than happy to welcome them into their circle, even though Usami has the wit and dignity of an orange cat. They knew Subaru wasn’t feeling well, but they just let her be shejust as they began to realize that Rintaro would tell them what happened when he was ready. Rintaro will be fine – everyone from his friends to his mom will have his back. All he has to do is realize this and understand that he will never feel alone and excluded again.
