Episode 19 – Witch Watch

There isn’t much time to focus on the Nico and Morihito relationship between all the big revelations we’ve gotten over the past few weeks, but this episode has brought it to the attention. The progress between the two is very slow, as Nico still can’t make himself fully acknowledge his feelings, and it’s hard to read his exact feelings about Nico except Morito has the density of the steel wall. This time, as we learn more about Nico and Morihito’s childhood, the show finally sheds light on that, and the answer we’re getting is very unexpected.

Morihito ends up meeting an old letter he received from Nico saying that they will always be friends, which makes him think about the past because she was his only friend when he was young. We also learn that Morihito’s mother died when she was young and when he visited her grave, Nico decided to introduce his childhood to others. While Morihito always tries to assure his sick mom that he has many friends, he is mainly played by himself because he is afraid of hurting other children with unusual power. The only exception is Nico, and it’s interesting that their dynamics remain unchanged since childhood because even then, she often subjected him to her spells to cheer him up. Still, it was clear that her friendship was of great significance to Morihito, so when the other kids tear down the letter she wrote about leaving a friend, he went out of his way to put the pieces back in place, watching it every day for years. It was very sweet, and although Morihito regretted how many friends he told his mother he had, he is now proud to say that he had gotten more since then and that’s because Nico had caused him trouble but he thought she was his best friend. This is the deepest insight we have about Nico’s strong feelings, and given the situation here, this moment should be heart-warming. It’s just as interesting, as Morihito blurs how he sees Nico’s best friend, while the poor girl cries because of how she can’t get herself out of her friend’s area. It’s a tone whip that shouldn’t work, and it does show how the series is made.

It turns out that more may happen about why Nico and Morito’s relationship remains unchanged, not just the intensiveness of our ogre boys. In the flashback of childhood, there is a seemingly accidental moment when Nico explains to Moritho that the witch’s words can have power, which is why she wants to pour her feelings into that friendship letter. However, after hearing the story, Nemu realized that doing so could have some unexpected consequences, as watching this every day puts a curse on Morihito’s heart and prevents him from seeing Nico as anything other than a friend. In some ways, this explanation seems somewhat unnecessary, as Morihito seems to involve his own concentration even without the literal magic, and it does threaten their relationship to become more unnatural. Even so, it is a very interesting twist, and despite its threat, it is closely related to their existing dynamics and does not retroactively undermine the little progress they have made so far. Not to mention, Nico accidentally cursed Morihito’s idea of getting her into a friend’s area when it was said and done was very brand-name for her, and the fact that this twist was both devastating and interesting made it hard to pick on it.

When Nemu decided to pass this information to Kanshi and Keigo, both of them thought they could tell Morihito and Nico the truth, both of which would eventually hang, but it turns out that there is a serious problem here. Even if Nico didn’t do it on purpose, damning someone was a forbidden witch, and learning that her putting a person on a morihito might cause her to be anxious enough to get her on the path to becoming a warlock. On the other hand, if they try to tell Morihito the truth, then understanding the possibility of a curse may give any lingering romance he may have, so they have no choice but to keep the secret. For now, the best way they can control is to try to break the curse by raising Morihito’s romantic mood for Nico to go beyond it, but first, they need ideas about how he feels right now. Fortunately, Nico eavesdropped on enough of the conversation to suggest they used one of her spells, where she whipped a spell that could symbolize a person’s feelings by sprouting flowers that sprout on her head. In Nico’s case, we see a large pink flower that symbolizes her huge obsession with Morihito, and for others how her friendship with Kanshi symbolizes the insects buzzing around the plant, while Miharu and Keigo are two dragonflies, one annoyed by the other (Nemu, of course, avoids her feelings, can both see its effect as quickly as Keigo and can look at her trie as quickly as she does Tories, her feeling could soon be like her. When it comes to casting a spell on the unsuspecting Morihito, all we see is two caterpillars, one caterpillar that is protective. That’s all the evidence Nico needs to show that Morihito has nothing but a friend who needs protection, but how grateful she is when she tells him the letter she holds to him, the letter changed and the caterpillar becomes a glittering butterfly. Although Nico thinks Morihito values their friendship, others notice that the butterflies look like Flowers are as terrible, and Morihito has a romantic feeling about her after all, but doesn’t notice them at all. Even being threatened by a literal curse that can stop the two from connecting, which is as optimistic as we hoped in the romantic world, I want to think both of them end up being good. Nevertheless, now that we know what these two are making neither of these measures impossible to give up, I’m glad to see how the series continues to work with the idea of the whole curse, and what kind of people it can bring, what it can bring, so that Morihito and Nico can finally smoch.
