Episode 18 Kaiju No. 8 Building the next big hook for the season, but I can’t help but ask that’s the right direction the series should take.
The threat from Kaiju 9 has completely re-aligned JAKDF’s priorities. This makes sense because he is a very powerful villain. The ability to modify Kaiju to a greater advantage and to give them unique abilities represents a huge shift in the balance of power, no doubt. This also coincides with the way the audience submitted No. 9. At this point, No. 9 has been wandering in the background or actively attacking the hero, which is almost the whole story, so his level of threat is this great repertoire, which is very good with his trap.
This all fits well into the upgrade with JAKDF’s desperate strategy. Hoshina is willing to work with Kaiju 10, and Reno is willing to wave Kaiju 6, a general willingness to try untested recruits to achieve novel strategies – all highlighting the situation they are in.
I think the most powerful part is Reno wrestling, should he accept Kaiju 6’s cloak. He reflects on Kafka as an inspiration, and once he adapts, he realizes that Kafka has to deal with this exact struggle every time the beast takes over. It’s great to have a character who can sympathize with Kafka’s situation, Reno chose to go the wrinkles of the way.
The problem I had was that it all seemed a bit messy. Kafka hasn’t had much of this season, and the way Reno’s meditation is made up, you’d be forgiven for thinking Kafka was straightforward. Currently, our leadership has become a memory in function, as everyone else is focused. Plus the insult of the injury is that I really think we will see more of Kikru’s training after the past few episodes make her the next lead. I know the training may be done in the background, so this is not an insurmountable issue. But I can’t help asking if we are introducing all these elements so quickly, if we are losing one of the main threads. After revealing the power of his already alive, spending a while with Kafka might be a good call, I mean, he was in the show championship after all…
