Man, if this episode is anything to go by, these weekly reviews are going to be difficult because I feel like I could write an entire thesis on character analysis and thematic relevance. It’s been a while since I’ve seen such an epic downfall of a major villain, and I’m not just talking about the animation, which still looked spectacular, but also the fact that this guy almost went through a negative character arc and was back to square one at the end. I mean, the episode literally starts with the birth of our villain and ends with the non-existent birth. This crazed sociopath, a ruthless killer from the womb, left this world crying like a baby. This is absolutely a wonderful article.
All For One is always about control. The first gift he received at birth was a quirk he stole from his own mother, and the only way this man showed his love for his brother was by dragging him around like a teddy bear. Control is the only way this person can feel anything. He loved his brother because he had control over him, and the first time he got really angry was when he felt like his brother was stolen from him. All the while, the “All For One” generation’s obsession with taking back the “One For All” is just the cry of a desperate man trying to take back the first thing he truly has control over. Ironically, One For One was created based on one of All For One’s first real gifts to his brother, but it became the ultimate act of rebellion against his brother. He never cared about power; He just wants his brother back because he can’t bear to lose something.
That doesn’t make him sympathetic in any way, shape, or form. Instead, it’s supposed to be cathartic, as All For One sees his story as that of an evil emperor who can rule through fear. He wants to be a comic book villain because of what they represent. Well, he gets what he wants, because he finally walks out like a classic supervillain with the power of friendship and hubris. The show sets it up a little thicker than it needs to be, with Bakugo looking exactly like the man who took All For One’s brother away from him. Even the way the characters talk about the similarities makes this sound like a retcon. But I think the show gets a clear parallel, considering this is also a great finisher for Bakugo.
I’m not sure if the show is trying to emphasize that All For One represents a dark reflection of what Bakugo could be like if he made a mistake or two. Bakugou lives his life thinking this is his world and everyone lives in it. He thought it was his story, but every time someone reminded him that it wasn’t, he always broke down. All For One had never been in a car accident when he was younger, so he was forced to do so here. But Bakugou is humbled that now he’s able to put a stop to one of the worst manifestations of what a quirk can mean to this society/ It’s interesting that the loudest, most abrasive character on the entire show is one of the last acts of defiance against a man who can’t emotionally handle someone who says no to him.
Everything was lost for the sake of one. He lost his brother, he lost his disciple, he lost his elegance, he lost years of his life, and in the end, he even lost all the quirks he had accumulated over the decades. Unless all these different things come together to stop this man, there’s no victory, and while it illustrates what a powerful threat he is that it took so long to finally take him down, it’s also relevant to the next generation. Generations, young and old, need to unite if such forces are to be stopped. Even if this thing resolves itself, there will always be another person like All For One in the world. But as long as these kids and adults can continue to inspire each other and work together to ensure that people like this never stay on top for too long, then the future will be as bright and explosive as Bakugo’s.
PS I’m putting off rewatching dubbing I won’t be able to rewatch it in its entirety until after the season is over, but it goes without saying that based on what I’ve heard so far, it’s fantastic. What Christ Sabat brings to All Might defines the character as iconic, Eric Weir Because Shigaraki is full of evil and I love all the levels Ryan Negron Bringing a younger version of All For One. I particularly enjoyed the second episode of this season, the acting sounded like a mix Eric Weir and John Swasey Emphasis on Shigaraki’s influence on All For One. But I’m writing this review before we started the big push Clifford Chapin and Justin Brenner Bakugo and Deku respectively. This show helped propel their careers to the top, and I can’t wait to hear how they end it.
