Episode 16 – Witch Watch

As with the tradition of this show, a new pretty boy is added to the main ensemble and we have to get a plot to understand that they incorporate it into a sense of humor. It was Miharu’s turn this time, and while the savage energy he showed in the introduction provided a lot of reasons to think he would do a good job of bounceing the rest of our goofballs band, the episode went all out and brought him fun at his expense. However, while it certainly succeeds in making Miharu as interesting as other actors, the most exciting development in this episode has nothing to do with our new vampire boys.

Before we were at the main event, the first two shorts were all about Miharu adapting to Otogi family life, and they were just as cute and fun as they were. In the first we see how Miharu wants to get along with others, but even if that almost leads him to blur Nico’s obsession with Morihito, he is just ruthlessly speaking out. None of this was done on purpose, but he certainly wouldn’t play the cute little brother card if he didn’t let others scold him, and it’s interesting how quickly they would get stuck in his behavior as he continued to want to spend time with his newfound siblings. Just as childish as Miharu seems, he does at least have enough maturity to point out the unhealthyness of the current family dynamics. He saw how everyone was content to let Morihito do most of the chores while the rest were minimal. Miharu lets himself make them do some good things for Morihito and cook for him, but since good things are rarely punished in this show, all of this leads to Morihito returning to their home where they almost burned the house. It’s funny, and the only thing that saves Miharu from Morihito’s rage is that it’s just a typical day for him, and he thinks Miharu will be suitable for everyone else.

The second shorts put more emphasis on Miharu himself as he tried to get a new balcony to stop the sun as Kanshi claimed his old man was stolen by a guy with a mustache and a burlap. Simply lending him another umbrella would be too mundane, and it was the solution to this dilemma, so Nico made him a magic cloud that would linger on him as he walked outside. The only gain is that this cloud is directly related to Miharu’s mood, so he has no choice but to stay frustrated by reading things like reading Flander’s Dogthis is very hysterical. It’s also fun to see his efforts to keep his pained efforts also thwarted by a bunch of smiling kids or random marriage proposals. Although these moments made him happy, they almost made him hit by the sun. The only thing that manages to make him sad is meeting a frustrating comedy duo, but seeing their struggle reminds him of himself, and the achievement of all this is how he suggests how to make others perceive as negative traits, to make it a negative force. It’s a sweet scene that gives us a look at how Miharu embraces his vampire legacy. Eventually, Miharu does stumble upon the thief who stole his parasol, and the boys buried the axe after seeing him match Kanshi’s ridiculous description. Although neither this nor the previous shorts had a particularly memorable final point, they still provided enough laughter or I would have thought they were the winners and I was happy to see Miharu fit in well into his new weird family.

Like all Miharu’s point, the real highlight of this episode ends up being a weird but engaging pairing of Nemu and Keigo. When Nemu shows up to fulfill her promise and let the wolf run from time to time, she finds herself alone with Keigo, who has no clue as to why a cute girl wants to be with him. So in this case he does what any teenage boy would do: the default behavior is like a dress-up person, looking cool in front of her. Even Nemu can be seen through his behavior, and it’s even more interesting when we think of herself as not being a completely social butterfly and barely able to talk to him. As you would expect, putting those shocking fools in these two society together is comedy gold. Even with the act of watching the movie full of awkward tension, it’s almost impossible not to laugh at it when Keigo desperately tries to gossip and Nemu tries to show Keigo the new moon’s moon without tilting him. It’s also fun and fun, and the two are beginning to realize that they have a lot in common when they feel they don’t meet what others expect from them. While I don’t think anyone would have thought of pairing these two before these two segments, they are so pleasant that it’s hard not to see them hang up as they finish. Of course, this may take a while since Nemu is still intimidated/attracted by Wolf’s Bad Boy Sudine and turned into a mess the moment she successfully transformed Keigo into him, but seeing how this new relationship will develop makes it even more exciting. It’s great to see the show continue to build new character dynamics, as long as they’re as entertaining as we’ve gained in this week’s episode, I’m sure it will continue to find a lot of ways to take advantage of them.
