Poor Gilbert Bryce. It’s already obvious now that he has a warmer relationship now Anne Shirley More than she cares about is to admit it- this week, we get confirmation from her knowing her. She responded quickly and decisively as they stood on the bridge staring at the glittering waters (or at home’s ponds of Barry) as he tried to act: She twitched her hands and hurried home in hopes that Gilbert would be satisfied with the friendship.
This is a sentiment worth discussing. As Anne grew, Diana’s engagement and her upcoming higher education, she distinguished herself from many partners by not considering marriage. As one of Davy’s classmates involved, it’s not surprising that she has already established or pursued a wife’s degree at school. But Anne is not ready for this, because she has made it clear to Diana. Even if she was reluctant to Gilbert, she certainly wouldn’t take action on it. This is not because she generally doesn’t like marriage. But she is not there yet. She was shocked by the group comments from new friend Philippa about all the boys who came home, which showed that it was not what she thought of. That doesn’t mean she’s comfortable hearing Prissy talk about Gilbert’s appearance or seeing him get out of the way with others (especially Ruby), but Anne is still working hard – she’s already grown. She knew she might take longer than her friend.
This is a uncomfortable place. Even the old bid (or, as Gilbert calls it in Chapter 2 Annie on the islandAvonlea’s “Malicious Old Cat” did not deceive herself and tried to dissuade her from going to college, and she was still aware of her position. She said last week that she was unsure that the curve on the road was the right thing to do, and now that she is approaching it, the uncertainty is even more obvious. She might (finally) raise her hair and put down her skirt, but it’s just an adult trap. Only Gilbert seemed to fully understand that she was struggling, but he also had ulterior motives to try to win his heart, which made him imperfect comfort at best. It may be Diana said she felt everything was changing irrevocably, but no one felt it more than Anne.
But the world moves forward. Anne’s trip to the university shows that in countless ways, the first is Kingsbury’s electric street lights flashing. So far it is specialized for candles and oil lamps, which makes sense for the tiny rural avonlea. In the harbor and under the sails, the boats are shown in the harbor, we only see rowing boats and small sailing boats. Anne’s view of the cemetery from the boarding house window made her very aware of the past, as she read the epitaph from the colonial era and grieved those who fought in the war. Philippa herself is a symbol of the changing era – not only is her clothes at least more than it should be (she wears the style of World War I, not the late Victorian era), but she is also a new woman.
This new woman is the ideal of what we call the first wave of feminism today, and he is a woman who works, goes to college and takes charge of his own life while doing scandals like riding a bicycle. She put on makeup (see Phil’s red lips!). She postponed her marriage. She is something Anne struggles with not fully aware of, and Phil is always talking about many suitors and modern outfits, all representing. Anne may not fully embrace her ideals, but she is like the young women in the world, and participating in Redmond is part of it… She deliberately shuts down Gilbert’s proposal.
Of course, he won’t be easily postponed. We will see how it works for them.
