I didn’t expect gachiakuta Not long after ending Amota’s harrowing adventure, we’re thrown into a massive brawl against the Raiders, but “The Storm Before” makes it clear that this isn’t the kind of anime that slams on the brakes and takes a breather after its best episode to date, so I can appreciate the promise of capitalizing on that momentum and immediately throwing the Janitors into another deadly challenge. “Clash!” gives us exactly what it promises on the tin: an intense brawl between the Raiders and Cleaners that’s a ton of fun to watch.
In fact, I’m going to address one of my big problems with this episode right now: I’m tired of the anime using vague, anonymous underground caverns as battlefields for extended battle scenes. I admit that the choice of arena is important gachiakuta The layers of filth and trash are a defining feature of the world compared to other series, but it just doesn’t look very interesting. Plus, even a well-done animation like this has a hard time dealing with scenes of lights and shadows that are deliberately set in dank, dark spaces. The near-monochromatic palette works well in shows with sharper contrast and more vivid tones, but gachiakutaof The whole problem is, everything looks like it’s covered in a three-inch layer of sweat, dirt, and God knows what else. Can’t we just teleport to a place with at least a little sunlight?
This is a minor complaint, thankfully gachiakuta It’s a strong enough show that a picky old curmudgeon like me can still get a lot of enjoyment out of the spectacle on display, even if it seems a little too quiet for me. Thank God we haven’t entered the equivalent of Let’s go, let’s go, Loser Ranger!of The endless parking lot arc. Plus, the show does find ways to spice up the show’s “Clash!” Progress – I particularly enjoyed the continued use of abstract painterly visuals to depict Ludo and Zoldir’s apocalyptic vision.
It also helps that the show is getting better at making its expository dialogue and world-building as truly compelling as its dramatic storytelling. Jabber makes a fine representation of the Raiders with his psychological sadism skills, but Zodyl is a stoic and intimidating leader here who needs to be able to project menace and gravitas by simply standing there and asking Ludo a series of ominous, leading questions about his relationships and motivations. This is a classic prototype, but difficult to get right. As annoying as this joke has become, there’s a reason why so many fantasy and superhero stories these days feature characters who become morose from enduring endless over-the-top monologues. You have to create a character who is clearly an evil egotist who has to be stopped by our righteous hero, but you also have to make the person interesting in his own right.
So far, Zodyl fits the bill. Ludo has shown that he’s insecure about trusting others and still carries some very deep scars that fuel his anger, so Zonder’s attempt to shake Ludo’s faith in the Cleaners and switch him to the Raiders job is a tense scene (even though we know there’s no way Ludo would actually switch sides). Meanwhile, the rest of the crew are dragged away by Zoldir’s subordinates for isolated duels, which lend each raider a meaningful air of danger. As far as bad guys go, I really like Raiders.
add, gachiakuta Still a great action anime, so both the Raiders and Cleaners get cool points for being a little more interesting for the usual song-and-dance smacking of each other. Amo’s situation is a fun exercise that ends up not really action or spectacle, so it’s nice to see gachiakuta The crew at Studio Bones cracked their knuckles and showed off. The Jabber and Zanka rematch was as interesting as you’d expect, but I’m really here to see what the new Raiders can do against Enjin, Riyo, and the rest. Nolde would be a cool addition to the cast of villains based on her character design alone, but I give gachiakuta Bonus points for providing an enemy with magical hair for Riyo and her deadly scissors. I can’t wait to see how things pan out next week as the battle against the Raiders continues.
