Aside from prophecy and follow-up to unresolved plot beats, this is probably one of the more passive finals I’ve seen. A large part of it may feel this way, as our main character, Koichi, has little to do with the episode being dragged down and singing on stage. This episode sums up the roles our main characters play throughout the season. Pop did her own thing and was able to develop herself as an idol, so that she can now be said to be more official. KnuckleDuster is able to solve the storylines about his wife and daughter. But Koichi is there. He was told to go to the place and was dragged down by circumstances beyond its depth. We even have to have the narcissistic hero tell him that he might have more problems than solving the problem, which is a shame because I don’t feel the show can do a good job that is to determine the celebrity captain is wrong.
This is not to say that Koichi has not experienced any role development throughout the season, but that he has no significant impact on what happened. I know Knuckleduster mentioned earlier that he was using Koichi and Pop to draw his daughter. We know that pop music attracted Koichi because of her feelings for him, but it’s hard for me to remember what he did except for an episode where Koichi saved Makoto and did a huge heroic act. I’m worried that the show isn’t entirely sure about the impact of their vigilant activities on the community, or that all of this is tied to the Bee Freak users. Koichi even ended the episode saying that they didn’t spend much time together and that things were just beginning. The point is that this is the next season’s setting, as Koichi’s character arc is over, Koichi will be able to get into the center stage (even if he will be back sometime in the future), but that does make things a little less so, like it’s more important to be a bigger story than a steady self-constituting story.
As for the matter that was resolved, Knuckleduster and his daughter and I felt a little choked about the hospital scene. KnuckleDuster has this warm presence to him as he tries to comfort his daughter, and how will they be, even though they may be the most broken person in the entire series. Knuckleduster just lost his wife and only managed to catch her at the last moment to make sure she found her daughter. Given what happened to her, it is very likely that their daughter would cause permanent physical harm to her body. It’s a happy ending, but I want to put a big asterisk there because it will take a while for them to have any look of normal life. That’s what I want to see more stories, and I hope we get more in season 2.
alert It’s a tricky show because it has a lot of good character moments and lots of cute ideas, but it feels like the show doesn’t know how to juggle all of that. This is a problem with the main series, too, but at least it has a more direct overall goal and I’m at least a compelling protagonist. Here, despite the much smaller cast, it still manages to be everywhere. I hope all the teasing about quirk experiments and new villains next season will be even stronger.
