After Onimaru fled to the sky after her big fight with Yaiba last week, I hope he could be put on the rear burner or at least changed his game after being destroyed by a sword. Sadly, it was the same age as he was as old as he was because he returned to his world to conquer the goal. If Onimaru hadn’t become the evil overlord, then I wouldn’t be in a hurry to get there. Thankfully, this episode offers a neat distraction in the form of Yaiba’s lost fiancé. While I’m a bit disagreeing about what her presence might mean for the future, it makes the show more interesting escapes.
Between losing the ball of lightning and lacking the way to reach the Onimalu Castle in the sky, Yaiba has no choice but to do additional training. Considering that we had Yaiba learn a signature attack only just a couple of weeks ago, jumping another training arc seems excessive, so I’m pretty okay that this one was largely played for laughs and gave the animators an excuse to play around a bit as he’s saddled with doing chores for “strength training” (the giant iron clogs Yaiba has to wear with during grocery shopping were particularly Great). Despite all this going on, Sayaka’s family, Dojo, is suddenly challenged by a mysterious swordsman, who quickly reveals that she is Yaiba’s self-proclaimed fiancé, Yamoto Nadeshiko, who wants to turn Dojo into their love nest.
Although I know Japanese history or culture for sure, this show otherwise showed a love for Japanese history, but I can only assume that the YAMOTO here refers to the word “Yamato Nadeshiko”. It refers to the long-term ideal of a woman who “traditionally embodies the virtue of women” (i.e., a submissive housewife). Of course, this is not a show that challenges gender norms, but I can respect the joke of a girl with a adjoining name and turning her into a strong swordsman. She also proves that she is not as delicate as her references, as she manages to keep up with Musashi and Kojiro, who ends up being easily beaten in a short time. For the strength of those two, they still couldn’t help but walk around their own way, as Kojiro relies too much on his magic sword to win the normal Kendo Duel, and Musashi only lasted about three seconds before throwing the back. Both are very interesting and although this show is strictly a joke, I’m glad we’re still getting some good battle animations between these gags.
With both down, this makes Sayaka the only remaining fighter and how clear the skill gap between them is even if she realizes she doesn’t have a chance. In all of these processes, we learn more about the nature of Yaiba and Yamoto’s “engagement”. When young Yaiba was a child, she saved the latter from a tiger when she got lost in the jungle. She was almost immediately fascinated and began to follow him, but Yaiba was not interested in having a partner who was not a good warrior, so she decided to give herself to her and she would become stronger if he agreed to marry her one day.
For anyone with a level of knowledge about early knowledge Dragon Pearlwhich all sounds very familiar, as it reflects Kid Goku’s unexpected engagement almost perfectly interacting with Chi-Chi. It’s not like the show once How much of Yaiba’s character is inspired by Kid Goku, and if Yaiba will be the proper respect, then he also has only one childhood fiancé that conveniently forgets his childhood fiancé. However, this joke doesn’t track it like it does Dragon Pearlbecause Yaiba acts as if he has never been with other girls before meeting Sayaka, and given that his harassment frequency is not exactly a swordsman, but I don’t buy Yaiba Yaiba takes the power of her partner more seriously than anything else. Even so, when Yaiba comes out, I can’t deny that it all peaked with a very good focus, and he not only distracted YAMOTO enough to win a sneak attack, but it also shows that he confuses Yamoto’s marriage proposal, thinking she thought she ran a Soba store and was always very satisfied with it. Failure and the shock of knowing their beloved don’t know that the engagement they assumed was enough to make YAMOTO call it exit, but when Yaiba was impressed by her power and said how much he loved the powerful, she decided to force herself into Sayaka’s home and continue trying to win his victory. When I wasn’t sure I like Sayaka and Yaiba, I can’t say I’m interested in this new love triangle. Still, it’s better to give Sayaka extra than nothing.
In the short term, we have taken a new adventure when Yaiba’s father returns to tell him another powerful Orb called Dragon God Orb. This can give its users the power to fly, which is exactly what Yaiba needs to reach Onimaru and solve the score once and for all. But even if Yamoto has access to a map of some potential locations, there is no exact location, so we do a road trip with the decision to search for each clue. It’s a solid lead on the show’s next show, but I’m not sure if I’ll be disappointed with another long extraction task. I’d at least like to see the show enough to make the formula enough to not make this too much reread. I wasn’t very confident about this happening, but this episode received enough kindness that I’m willing to bring some questions about it.
