This episode begins with wallop. I’m worried that sometimes I’ll ignore the adaptation to it hikaru died in summerso I want to praise how it brings us into Yoshiki’s point of view. He might have a foot on the other side, but that doesn’t mean he’s mentally ready to stuff his best friend’s cut head into his leg. The result is Yoshiki’s hysteria and the sinister, sloping laughter in the Tanaka, which is a harsh and color. It doesn’t feel like a real nightmare.

Many other explanatory moments in this episode involve one of my favorite folk horror sections, as a genre: Relationship to History. Again, here we learn about the origin of Nonuki-sama as an abortion drug derived from cinnabar. While this seems to be a stretch, many cases have many verifiable historical facts that become feed in myths and legends that replace feed in real-life cultural consciousness, so it can definitely happen here. When times are difficult and there is a lack of understanding of the natural world, it is particularly easy for people to invent gods, demons and other creatures. And if enough people believe in something, especially in small and isolated groups, collective psychological power is far beyond reality.
Maki’s brother’s message also brings real-life religion into a mix. The mountainous areas are regarded as a village cursed centuries ago, but this makes it an ideal shelter for Christians who were persecuted in Japan at the time. However, Kubitach remains a “pagan” due to the village’s close ties to the source, which may be due to the positive role of Indian families in the rituals around Nonuki-Sama. This is also convincing because Christians don’t care about other gods except their own, and I would love to see if this story has more effect on this angle. I can’t help but find the history of Japanese Christianity fascinating.
Meanwhile, other details of donating blood to Nonuki-Sama are evil. It is so terrible to bury dismembered body parts in areas named after the same body (geographically resemble people who are sticks) that are almost fun. The English equivalent is to find a bunch of feet in a small town called Footsville that looks like feet on a map. To be clear, I like this. There is no doubt that Hikaru needs people. In the post-loan scene, he still seems to be drowsy by his recent beheading, like a moth being blazed by flames, he finds himself running around in Yoshiki’s position. Hikaru’s interior is cold so he seeks radiation and he can feel the spin of Yoshiki. This is probably what Nonuki-sama did to those skulls-give them to make up for his emptiness. If so, whenever Hikaru’s intuition takes over, that’s what he’s trying to do. In the ward, we see Yoshiki almost fall into Hikaru again before Kurebayashi kicks him out of it, and wakes up Hikaru again. But violence and coercion are not the only way to solve loneliness. They are not even the best way to do it. So, Yoshiki might need help Hikaru realize that there are some kinder, more modest ways to ease the gaps contained within us all.
