At least Leohart has good reason to do his job. I wasn’t exactly expecting it, not because the show wasn’t well written (although I’m a little picky), but because it doesn’t seem interested in plots outside of Sophia and Louis’s romance. But now, in the last hour, things finally come down to the dawn plot – surprisingly effective. Leohart’s story may not be new – it’s Ninafor recent anime examples, but this doesn’t make it effective or have less impact.
Leohart is not only going to kill the nobles, because he feels he likes it. He did this because he and his de facto family were treated to grow up. He, his two accomplices and a fourth boy named Cecil, both grew up in the slums and we briefly caught a glimpse last week that they were forced to rely on the aristocratic “friendliness” and sometimes bread and apples were delivered. When the nobleman was willing to adopt Leohart and bless him, his brothers convinced him to accept it, especially because the nobleman said he would continue to provide for the slum isolation. Somehow, they were too naive to realize that Duke’s character design might have introduced this guy, an evil McEvil.
What matters to Leohart’s past is not that it tends toward some familiar clichés, but that it drives him into the prejudice he despises. His prejudice against nobles is the noble I granted to you, and may be worth more than those who live in poverty. The nobles are terrible because they have privileges. Their pain for the poor is that they are Poorthis is a terrible reason to not like someone. But Leohart’s taming of all nobles with the same brush was not good either, because he did not stop just because of guilt. If he is, he will leave town after shooting his adoptive father in the face. Instead, he is using violence against him, which is a “probably right” justice. I’m not saying he doesn’t have legs to stand, but he can’t see the measures to return to the horror measure probably aren’t the best plan.
For Sofia, more importantly, he did the same thing to her. He did not bless him when the Duke adopted him, but his appearance might give a hint that Leohart would get a powerful man. (This is the Leopard God, which makes it a good moment, mentioning that in the comics, his name is translated as leopold.) Like a gorilla, the Leopard can only bless one person at a time, and Luhart’s theory is that if he works with Sophia and Sophia, no one can stop them. He was as bad as those who joined the Knights according to her blessings. He tried to frame it as saving her from a life he didn’t want, but he was doing the same.
If he had found her before he started training and he might have a chance before she met Louis, Isaac and Eddie. But now Sofia is happy, not just because she has a boyfriend – she is learning to stand up for herself and accept her blessings. She is more confident now, and I’m not sure she will find the same peace as Leohart. Unlike Louis, Leohart only wanted her for her Gorilla Powers. He could use her to avenge Cecil. He doesn’t care about Sophia as a person.
I don’t expect any definite ending to this series. There are too many in the air now, even if they are anxious, I suspect the ending will feel very, very good, The final. But it would be enough if Sophia proved to herself that she had found a level of confidence and happiness, and I believe the show could achieve that.
