Episode 4 – A Mangaka’s Weirdly Wonderful Workplace

Have you ever worked so hard that you didn’t even think about what you would do if you actually succeeded? Nana came up with this idea in this episode and I can’t really describe how much it hit me. While I can’t necessarily say that I’m also a published comics author, there are times when I get so involved in my work and just meeting deadlines that I never stop to reflect on what I’m actually building. This kind of thinking keeps you stuck in a routine, meeting deadlines, and you become detached from the idea that what you’re doing is actually going to be seen by other people, which is obvious. It’s like your brain doesn’t have the space to really think about it, and considering Nana’s constant anxiety throughout the show, it’s no surprise that she feels blindsided by her success.

This episode took a step back from the comedy and felt slower. Almost half of the episode is spent with Nana signing books that will be sold in bookstores with her editor. But what I loved was that I never got bored because the slow reality of Nana’s situation was paramount. I love that her modern success gives us a great opportunity to see how Nana and Kaede started working together. The fact that Nana went from an editor who rejected all of her ideas because they didn’t fit his personal preferences to one who seemed to give her enough space to let her creativity blossom is actually pretty sweet and explains a lot.

I still don’t know if the show is pushing for a romance between them (I don’t know if the bar scene at the end of the episode is leaning into that idea or teasing it), but I do like their friendship with each other. Nana seems to really respect and admire Feng, and Feng does see Nana’s talent. The two believe in each other in a way that they don’t believe in themselves, and I think that’s really important. There’s not much to add here other than the fact that this is just a feel-good episode. I wonder what’s next in Nana’s journey.
