With this episode Another World Quartetwe once again see our large cast of characters divided into new groups – this time tasked with growing morning glories. This, in turn, allows us to see interactions between characters who have never actually spent time together before. Most of them are just fun, silly notes – like Megumin taking Puck with her just like she did with Nagasuke, or Ora wanting to add Garfiel to her collection of beasts. But it doesn’t stop there.
Tanya’s dialogue with Ram highlights the major philosophical differences between these two emotionally reserved characters. Ram is a man who is willing to step back from the action – letting others plan, worry and, most importantly, take responsibility when things go wrong. However, Tanya is a huge control freak. The thought of leaving her fate in the hands of others, mortal or divine, had always irked her. What is important here, however, is that Tanya realizes this about herself. She’s self-reflective enough to understand that her need to be controlling can work against her – if she were more like Ram, her life might be easier. However, this does not mean that she can change who and what she is.
In terms of the overall plot of the season so far, Team 2 is shocked by the first appearance of the Shadow – whose magical power exceeds even Megumin’s explosive power. The more evil characters in the class – namely Tanya and Demiurge – are concerned that he is not a member of their class. This is because the rules of this world promote friendship within a specific class, but not with the other two classes in the school. (Yes, there are two. Thankfully, the end credits reveal that Yunyun can at least hang out with the butler and the “school pet” instead of being forced to sit alone in a classroom.) If they were Shadows, they’d consider exploiting this vulnerability to attack other classes if they let their guard down. After hearing his mysterious pronouncements on light, darkness, and shadow, they became even more worried.
The big joke of this episode is that Tanya and Demiurge (two serious middle-aged adults) take Shadow seriously, while Kazuma, Subaru, and Ainz don’t. After all, they are young, a bit nerdy, and fully understand the concept of “mid-sickness.” They see Sid for who he really is—something no one else in his world can. Moreover, if Kazuma, Subaru, and Ainz met someone like Sid in their respective fantasy worlds, they would also come to the same conclusion, but Another World Quartet Give them someone to share that with – someone who truly understands. It must have been a relief for three people who usually fished it out of the water – even if they didn’t realize it.
