Fantagraphics Publishes Marina Lisa Komiya’s On Their Frontlines: The Lives of Japanese War Brides Manga in 2026 – News

Fantagraphics confirmed to ANN on Tuesday that it will publish the first volume of the book Marina Lisa is hereof on their front lines: The life of a Japanese war bride (Thousands of people) comic will be released on August 11, 2026.

This sensitive and moving comic debut follows the lives of two Japanese war brides after World War II and the tensions surrounding identity, sexuality, and cultural change as the country rebuilds from disaster.

After Japan’s defeat, the country was in devastation. No one felt the devastation more than women, who were forced into menial jobs, engaged in sex work, and used as war brides for American soldiers. Marina Lisa is here It follows the lives of two Japanese women and the American soldiers they married during this turbulent time.

Haru and Yiko were best friends (and possibly lovers) before the war, who got separated while evacuating the town during an air raid. When they subsequently find each other, Haru makes a living as a waitress, while Yoriko sells her body in a brothel. Their fate changes when they meet respected American soldiers and hold their hands. Arthur, a Japanese-American, grapples with the inner conflict of his dual identity, while Scott is fascinated by Japanese culture and feels guilty about the destruction caused by the U.S. military.

Love and understanding find their way amidst postwar desolation in this powerful comic that explores sexuality, identity, and unlikely cross-cultural connections.

This comic was published in Torch Network April 2023, ends on January 30. LEED Publishing The two single volumes of the comic will be released in April 2024 and April 21 respectively.
