After a wave of immigration, Japan has become an unstable mix of ethnicities and cultures, rocked by protests from xenophobic extremists dissatisfied with the new status quo. A brash, job-hopping young woman named Riko was driving her motorcycle through one such protest when she saw a boy about to be run over by a truck. Riko managed to push him away, and for the next few hours she found herself caring for the boy named Hideto.
Riko takes Hideto out for a bowl of ramen, but just as they prepare to dig a hole, Hideto is shot by an army sniper from afar. As the bullet ripped through the dining room window and whizzed toward Hideto, plant-like tendrils snaked out of his arm, stopping the bullet in mid-flight. Who is this boy, and why are the troops hunting him? !
