Episodes 38-40 – Spy×Family Season 3

“I don’t think so,” British writer Elizabeth Bowen wrote in an afterword to her 1945 collection of short stories devil lover,”That dryWar brings enough stress to our daily lives. Even though she was writing about her experiences in London during World War II, I think Luyd Forger would have understood exactly what she was talking about. No matter what kind of war you have been through, it leaves its mark, and sometimes those scars are passed down from generation to generation, whether people want to or not. For Luyd, his childhood during the hot war influenced his life during the series’ current Cold War, and whether he realizes it or not, these life experiences are shaping his life as “Luyd the Forger.” A father, a husband, and a spy.

Maybe it’s because of the impact WWII had on a generation and my family’s history, but episode 40 is both the standout of the opening three and a lot of to handle. Going back to the preview guide, I noticed that this season Spy×Family It doesn’t seem like it’s going all out, but now, after an episode and a half of Luid’s past, I’m glad they chose to open the show with the appearance of the cheerful Miss Schrager. (In German, “hit” means “he hit someone.”) Not only is it always a joy to watch Anya and Damian try to interact, but importantly, she takes a shot at Luid during his childhood. Lloyd harbored – and probably still harbors – guilt over the fate of his three friends, first assuming they died in an explosion and later learning they died on the battlefield. But Anya manages to save Damian. Of course, getting shot doesn’t equal being killed, but in the context of Eden Academy and Operation Strix – and Cold War versus Hot War – that might as well be the case. It shows how Anya can live the life Luid was denied and, more importantly, actually do a pretty good job as a father. He had a very difficult relationship with his father. Whether he realizes it or not, he will never repeat the same mistake with his daughter.

Going back to Bowen’s idea of the dryness of daily life before he went on Operation Strix, I think this is probably an accurate depiction of Luyd’s life. His “normal” was taken away twice by bombs, and his answer was to get angry and join the fight. War is not “normal,” but Luyd has forgotten that by the time we meet him. But switching from the “spy” part of the title to “family”, his life begins to transform from the desert into something better. I doubt he realizes this, but while he’s still on an intelligence mission, he’s more stable than he’s been in a long time. The image of Anya leading the child versions of Loid and Yor in the game in the opening theme helps symbolize that as a family they are learning to deal with their past and move on.

Of course, this takes time. When Luid wakes up at the end of Episode 40, he doesn’t think, “This is my house,” he thinks, “This is Lloyd’s “House,” so there’s still a lot of disconnect. (Ironically, his fake job was as a psychiatrist.) But he’s now more willing to show that he cares, which is no small thing since the last people he loved – his parents and his friends – died tragically. He goes from barely being able to interact with Frankie to telling Bond not to eat onions, which is a big step for him.

I feel like these episodes about Loyd’s past are important. If you don’t know where you’ve been, you don’t know where you’re going, and forgetting the past comes at a cost. Spy×Family Obviously, this is fiction, but if it makes us remember history, or seek out history, that’s a good thing. If we forget, we do so at our peril.

But don’t worry – things get interesting next week.
