When you are young, you dream of dreams. Many people are driven by the need to “become someone” – the socioeconomic situation where they were born and become something more. Of course, the problem of “some experience” is the simple fact that there are not many, even talent and hard work are often not enough to achieve this.
This is the situation of getting stuck. She started out as a big fish in a small pond, but even then she would occasionally taste the ocean. She is so popular as a promising person that agencies in Tokyo sometimes experience the trouble of taking her out of work. So once she actually moved to Tokyo to attend college, she should blow it up, right? OK, wrong.
For two years, Nene has sat on the brink of her big breakthrough. She received sporadic modeling jobs and even won the beauty/talent competition at the university. But it was because of her appearance, personality, skills or just bad luck that she never went bankrupt. In fact, she has received the most recognition because she sounds like a popular singer Touko Kirishima.
Surrounded by broken dreams, she was unable to enter her university twice and join Tokyo with her boyfriend Takumi, and felt desperate and became the idea of becoming Touko Kirishima. No one knows Touko’s true identity, who can say she can’t? If she adopts Touko Kirishima’s identity, all her dreams will come true. She would have become big and become someone. All that was spent was to discard her real life and everything in it.
Nene has been on the verge of the knife for most of the season. She lives like Touko that her puberty syndrome makes her unable to see, but she still can’t let Takumi go, even though he can’t see her. The man who could see her only once, Sakuta couldn’t cure takumi, and she finally let go of her past completely and couldn’t see herself as anyone but Touko. After all, why stick to your old life when one thing she wants is one thing she can’t have?
But, of course, once Takumi can see her – can remember how much he loves her – it’s different. While her puberty syndrome may get her into touko, her core is still there to listen. So it all overflows – she thinks she is a failure in life. It’s better to pretend that you are a valuable person than live like her. Even though Takumi tries to reach out to her, it is Sakuta.
Sakuta is on both sides of a similar situation to Nene. He knew the feeling of invisibility and isolation and had the opportunity to escape into a world of dreams. But despite all his shortcomings and failures, he found his life worthwhile, and that’s a reason for no other reason: Mey loves him. His presence makes her life better. When he loves her in return, he just hopes not to hope.
So for Nene, it all boils down to one question: Is love enough? Is the love of an ordinary man worth giving up her dream life of working over the years? She thinks it is. Like many ages, she was forced to accept reality–and while normal life would be bad, it does carry high points.
This is also associated with all the other Santa’s “Touko Kirishimas”. They are all away from reality and want to be “someone”. They face the fact that adult life is uncertain and terrifying. Finally, they got what they needed from Sakuta: a guy who was worse than them – a reason to hate them for hurting him – and everything would be fine. And hear this – suppressing it, their puberty syndrome.
So, in the end, everything is fine, right? Mai is safe, Nene and other Toukos have been cured, and there is no direct crisis to face, or at least that’s what Sakuta wants to believe. However, many mysteries remain.
