Naver, parent company Webtoon Entertainment companies face increasing labor unrest after wage negotiations with six subsidiaries on August 12. The controversy has now been raised in Studio Lico Webtoon– The production house owned by the company is famous for producing network/network novels Marry my husband and Mythical Project Obtained: Idle RPG game.
According to the Naver Union, the collapse was announced at a rally outside the Naver headquarters in South Korea on August 11. About 600 union members represented six subsidiaries.
Subsidiaries involved include Green Network Services, Studio LICO, NIT Services, NTS, Incomz and Carcartner. Talks this year were stalled as studio Lico signed a collective agreement last year. The union believes that while these subsidiaries perform “core functions” for NAVER, they are structurally separated into subcontract entities than direct Naver employees, resulting in lower salaries and less benefits.
Labor requirements vary by subsidiary. Studio LICO specifically requires its “global incentives” to be calculated as basic wages and wage increases consistent with its parents Webtoon entertainment.
The dispute is in Nafer Webtoon Recently, it revised its own salary agreement to phase out a long-term stock grant program worth about $7,500 to include 80% of the value into its base salary. Currently, the subsidiary receives a smaller percentage of this incentive system – Studio LICO of 60%.
