I really liked this episode, no, I don’t just say it’s because Mai doesn’t participate at all. It’s interesting to see how Satsuki’s relationship with Renako has been improving throughout the entire episode and how much of it is a mirror for the series. Satsuki basically sees the relationship as a match, so she is going through the action of what she thinks she needs to do and can even compete with Mai. She is still retaining, apparently she doesn’t want to share her own affairs, but everything from the date to the bath scene is conceptualized as a blow to Mai for revenge. You might think it would make her incredibly ruthless and cold, but I don’t just think Satuki’s move is the most reasonable on the show so far, but it also has potentially ironic and innocent feelings about her behavior.
Despite all the right things and honestly doing a legitimate chemistry with Renako, you will feel that Satsuki doesn’t really have a romantic or sexual intention. I really liked the bath scene in this episode because it contrasts with what Renako and Mai experienced. Satsuki is straightforward, kind of like the Queen of Ice, but she is also patient, despite literally taking a shower naked, she doesn’t push and doesn’t seem to have any real sexual intentions. It’s a very romantic scene, which makes you wonder how far the two can go if Satsuki actually starts seeing things this way. I like the fact that Renako needs to point out many of the actions to Satsuki, which is especially ironic when Renako literally falls into Satsuki’s chest and steals her first kiss at the end.
This episode feels like it covers a lot in character development and building legitimate romantic chemistry. That’s part of why last week’s plot bothered me so much, because it felt like a logical decision to make progressive dramas. Here, drama is intertwined with believable character behavior. I love Renako’s desensitization to her physical intimacy, so that she doesn’t even really pay attention to kissing Satsuki when she asks. I like that these two characters are seeing each other in their own way, and that Renako overthinking and Satsuki are under-thinking. I hope the show is the same, and I’m very worried about next week because I know it needs to be a climax of some sort by participating in Mai. Call it intuition, but I highly doubt if Meiy has emotional maturity to learn from the progress these two people have made in their relationship.
