Episode 13 – Yaiba: Samurai Legend

It looks like we jumped into the second one COUR of Yaibaand has a revised version of the opening song. I don’t think I like it as much as the first OP, because the second verse of the song is not that good and the visuals are very slippery in direction, but there’s still a lot of Zany Animation stuffing it up so I guess it still gets the job done. I love the new ED songs. It’s a stupid little dance number that shows Onimaru’s Mux’s POV, beaten by Yaiba every week and always yelled by the boss. It’s fun and reminds you how hard these poor people are.
Despite these new paint coats, the episode is largely the business as usual. After obtaining the map from Yamoto, Yaiba and others travel to Biwa Lake, hoping to find the Dragon God Ball and grant Yaiba’s flying power. At the same time, he tested his ship’s new Death Star Laser Onimaru “Onimaru Cannon” sends a new villain in the form of Yaiba, in the form of a warrior named Miyoshi Sekai Nyudo, who appears to be the Mismash between Sengoku Era Sekai of Sengoku Era Sekai and Sengoku Era Warrior in Japanese mythology of Mikoshi-nyudo. It’s a very interesting combination, though conceptually more important than execution, because despite being close to the ogre part of his eponymous and asserting that he won’t succumb to Onimaru, it doesn’t take much to get him into consistency.
His presence leads to one of the show’s best visual exhibitions to date. As Yaiba and others struggle to track Orb, their search eventually brought them to the middle of the lake, where Nyudo and Mr Spider ambushed them, and they quickly sink their ship. As everyone else clutches Kojiro’s sword to avoid drowning, this makes Yaiba defeat them, which brings some spectacular results. The show’s combination of high-energy action and cartoon farce has worked wonders for its animation so far, but even if the rest of the show looks so gorgeous, it’s even more impressive to see all the money that happens to the large extent of the capital. There is a lot to think about technically between the movement of the characters and the movement of the waves, but you can’t see it because it all looks as elastic and smooth as the rest of the show’s animation. The team managed to do this while also having Yaiba try to dart on Mr Spider’s stupid little cartoon plane, a skill that really proves the animation team’s skills to their skills. We even had crazy Yaiba surfing on the waves in the middle of this battle, and the fact that the fact that stands out on the TV animation production schedule is probably one of the biggest animation elasticities I’ve ever seen.
As cool as all of this, this is not Yaiba If there isn’t enough quirky level, it’s a good fit to turn Nyudo into a giant squid midway through the battle. This is on the left, but it is difficult to take care of when the subsequent cartoon violence sees Yaiba being slapped like rubber. In the middle of all these farces, Yaiba encounters that rock, and when Nyobo tries to hit him with it, the ball he has been looking for, instead becoming the ball granted to the flight, and instead shooting water, is not enough to help Yaiba get rid of this jam. Finally, it was Sayaka who saved the day by persuading Kojiro’s magic sword to put RAM into Squid-nyudo and giving Yaiba the opening he needed to win. While it’s nice to see her making a more dramatic contribution after her determination to get stronger last week, at least it’s an interesting way to end the fight. The episode ends with Onimaru launching a new team of animal warriors to handle Yaiba. It seems like we’ll be back to the Monsters of the Formula this week for a while, and while they seem to be more interesting than the previous batch, I’m not particularly excited to see the show continue this trajectory. If that was something that was going to be done in the foreseeable future, I can only hope that we could be as interesting as this fun as it would be, as it would be a good illustration of how interesting the formula would be when shooting on all cylinders.
