Episode 5 – One Punch Man Season 3

It took five episodes to get there, but it finally happened one punch man Season 3! This primarily werewolf-centric series tells the story of heroic hunters fighting those within the Monster Society who actually matter and are seen as threats, as opposed to businessmen who clearly don’t and won’t matter to anything that happens in the story. There’s no doubt that while this episode is still far from the version of the show that made it so popular, it’s a commendable improvement when it happens.

In this episode, we once again see clearly that the people at JCStaff who created this animation do not have the same abilities and talents as the people who created the animation. madhouse The team that participated in the first season one punch manbut now they’re at least trying to make up for that by making the episode more visually interesting. For every scene that features stock explosions, CGI fire, or looping motion-blurred punches, we get some more unique clips. Scenes of a hungry wolf and a unibrowed kid running around the unnaturally green corridors of the Monster Society’s underground hideout are an economical way of letting them know they’re in the depths of an oppressive alien space. Switching to black and white to reveal that the monster king Orochi is actually a seemingly infinite swarm of writhing dragons stuffed into a vaguely humanoid giant body is also a great way to show how fundamentally the werewolf situation has changed.

While it’s not surprising, at least the show is now getting more creative with its visuals, so it doesn’t feel like such a slog anymore.

Of course, that doesn’t negate some of the more disappointing choices presented in this episode. The scene in which Garou faces an attack that he’s sure will kill him is deliberately reminiscent of a similar experience against Saitama in Season 1, but this moment carries far less weight than the previous moment. I’m also a little frustrated that this localization coincides with the translation of the “Overgrown Pochi”, the giant dog monster the werewolves face. I know “Overgrown Rover” comes from a fan translation of the webcomic, but this name is easier to understand for English-speaking audiences and makes it clearer that the monster is just a big dog.

In a vacuum, this episode is fine, but in the context of the entire series, this episode is the high point of the season but is still worse than any episode in season one. Hope this indicates season 3 one punch man It’s improving, but I won’t hold my breath.
