Episode 2 – Disney Twisted-Wonderland The Animation

Now Disney’s Twisted Wonderland games basically print money (Global monthly revenue exceeds $4 million), I guess it wouldn’t be that hard to convince Disney animation is a good idea. Even so, I was surprised at how tolerant rats are. In “Ranking of Disdain,” decades of Disney archives are showcased and seven of them are reviewed franchiseThe most iconic villain. It is the core part of an episode and was originally there to set the plot in motion, staying true to the storyline of the Gacha game.

Yuken, we’re really in trouble right now. It doesn’t matter if Yokan, Crowley, the other students, and even the Magic Mirror all agree that Yokan doesn’t belong here. No one had even heard of Japan, and all the magic of the country wasn’t enough to bring him home. Instead, Yu (as classmates Ace and Deuce recently nicknamed him) has been cursed to the crumbling dormitory, a ruin held together by monstrous spirits and duct tape. Yu has a predictable protagonist energy that allows him to instantly befriend these ghosts, though of course it’s hard to be frightened by such joyful designs that are so classic I wonder if they’re from a forgotten Disney IP (they’re not).

Xiaoyu cannot use magic, so he must make ends meet by doing menial tasks, like scrubbing the school’s statues of the seven idols until they sparkle. These icons will seem very familiar to the audience, but Ace and Deuce’s depictions of people we interpret as villains are clearly whitewashed. The boys recited that the queen “did whatever it took to maintain her most beautiful position,” but failed to mention that one of the things she did was poison an innocent girl. In this way, Nightcrow Academy looks like an Ivy League school because it’s filled with statues of revered historical figures, which, upon closer inspection, is actually pretty bad. This rose-tinted reminiscence is accompanied by actual archival footage of the bad guys doing bad things, just in case there is any confusion. I also noticed that Yu is from modern day Japan and doesn’t seem to have Tokyo DisneySea or anything because he has never heard of Ursula, Maleficent, and the others.

All in all, being in the middle of a row of important landmarks is one of the most unlikely places to have a magical duel. The huge neon light has heralded the fate of Xiaoyu and Grim. Yuken is chosen by the black carriage, but he can’t cast magic. Grimm hasn’t been drafted yet, but he could be. Of course, in order for this dynamic duo to get into the academy, Yuuken first needs to avoid being expelled after that inappropriate duel. Crowley gives the gang another chance, which means a fetch mission into a creepy old mine. Sometimes the anime’s mobile game origins are most obvious – it’s not a narrative, but a series of tasks and objectives.

The end credits show the boys in their dormitory, providing personality and color to the above-average cast of characters, most of whom we haven’t even met. Considering this was all packed into a shorter-than-usual eight-episode series, we could use all the characterization we can get. Everything is set for a riddle with strict rules to be Yu’s first opponent (just like in the game), but the show will have to work its way through the other five.
