Description empire lovers:
1929, Korea. Arisa Jo, the daughter of a wealthy businessman, is the most eligible bachelorette in Gyeongsang (the capital). Her Western attire, movie star hairstyle and confident attitude embodied bold “modern” values. Meet her opponent, Jun Seomoon, a young man from the countryside with deep roots in tradition. Sparks fly between these opposing forces when Arjun is appointed by Arisa’s father as her bodyguard in the big city. Through this unlikely connection, these teens gain eyes and new perspectives on the rapidly changing world they live in.
Following the critically acclaimed “Angry Clouds”, “Empire Lovers” proves that Yudori is a mangaka at the peak of his creativity. On the surface they’re sweet and funny, not quite romantic, and the story gains depth from its depiction of Korea at a crossroads: a city occupied by Japan, influenced by the West, and faced with a modernity that inspires conflict among its citizens. Presented in brilliant full color, this period piece depicts a captivating city in a turbulent era and centers on two captivating characters.
