What made you decide to be a mango? Do you have any comics that like to influence you?
Samurai Kita: When I grew up, I liked it very much Naruto. My whole family actually loves it. Around that time, I also first thought of what I wanted to be a mango, but only about three, four or five years ago, I decided to actually give it a try.
What is the inspiration behind the creation Kagurabachi?
Hokasono: This is a big inspiration for the world view of the series Kagurabachi It’s the Hollywood version of Japan*which is always cool. I want to make a story in this environment.
*Hollywood’s portrayal of Japan often emphasizes and exaggerates traditional elements, which is different from reality.
The series features many sword duels and places great emphasis on technology. Before the series, were you familiar with swordsmanship and how much research would you need to do in the end?
Hokasono: In Chapter 1, one of the first scenes is that you can see how a sword is made by a blacksmith. Actually, I went to a blacksmith to see how to make a sword and watched the process myself. But, as for combat, I’m not really focused on realism, I want them to feel more dynamic. Because it’s a comic, you don’t have to be realistic, so you can basically go all out.

Weekly comic serialization can be difficult. What is your usual work schedule? How do you stop yourself from getting burned by your job?
Hokasono: For work schedules, basically, when the finished manuscript was completed last week, we meet immediately for the next meeting. It took me a while to finish the draft, which was actually six days. Then it took me a day to basically complete the whole process and get it done. To take a break or relax, I watch a movie.
patienceonce called Chino a samurai, his moral code of desire to kill with his sword is reminiscent of the protagonists in the classic samurai movie. How did you come up with Chihiro’s character, and did you draw any inspiration from the stories about the samurai?
Hokasono: I don’t think I’m getting much inspiration from the samurai movies, but when I look at all the other characters Shonen Jump Now, I want to make the characters slightly different from all characters. This is basically the way I proposed it with him.
We see some characters struggling with their parents’ legacy, such as revenge in the name of his father patiencetrying to live up to his reputation for family boundaries, or the samurai stays away from his daughter Iori because of past past. What makes you want to talk about this topic?
Hokasono: Apparently, the story centers on Chihiro and his revenge for his father. But to spread it and add more characters, I think if he could also be related to other characters, it would help the story progress, which would make the whole story more dynamic.
Although Chihiro claims that he wants to defend others with his sword, his desire for revenge also turns him into a killer. This is something he struggles with. How do you view his character? Do you think his desires are noble or self-destructive?
Hokasono: At first, Chihiro’s motives were his anger and hatred, but the more he understood other characters, the more he began to change. I think this is one of the most attractive things about Chihiro’s character.
